Self-Employed Motivation

Don't mean to sound harsh but maybe you should take up normal employment again if you don't have the self discipline to work self-employed. No-one can really make you do it except you, if you don't want to get up then don't, if you don't NEED to, you probably won't.

Change the way you work.

Only take a 30-50% deposit with final payment on completion.

This is a good idea, maybe factor in the contract with customers something like the below:

25% deposit on agreement of work and set a deadline,
Rest of payment once successful completion of work,
5% (or whatever % you want) bonus for early completion of work.

Money is a good motivator and it seems like you are taking on work with a longer lead time to completion than necesary. How about setting yourself shorter lead times with your customers, potentially making you more desireable as a business compared to your competition?

This is all of course said without knowing what business you operate in...

So I've been self-employed for about 14 months with a 7 month stint at a company in the middle (while continuing my own ventures).

My problem is that I find it really hard to get motivated when I'm my own boss. My alarm goes off at 8am and it's basically "I could get up now... or I could not and it'd make little difference".

You have to find what drives you personally.

Family - job brings the money in and the real reward is from your home life.

Job - the reward is from climbing the ladder, making the sale, engineering perfection.

It sounds like you need to find out what really matters to you.

I reckon this is a problem only you can solve. We can give you advice, but if you aren't motivated by work, you probably wont be motivated enough to action our advice.

I hate working, but I don't think of work, I just think of what I'm doing this weekend or what my next purchase will be.

You really need a space where you can work and just concentrate on work. I had the same thing as university a few years back - sitting at home there were too many distractions, but by going to the library each day it was much easier to get some work done.
