Self hosted cloud storage app (like Dropbox) to let a group of us share files?

So is there a recommended application I can install on my home machine to then share some folders with friends on our PCs? ie: So we can then just drop files/folders into there and we get it shared/copied across?

eg: Akin to Dropbox?

I assume there's issues in that such apps wouldn't store these files up in the cloud and ship them out from there, so all transfer/updates would need to be live (ony done when my and their machine is on)?

And Owncloud is free for me and my friends to use? The costs seems to be for business related use for thousands of pounds?

EDIT: Owncloud seems to be for Linux not a Windows 10 PC (my Server is Windows 10)

EDIT: Same with Nextcloud too!

Might be moon-on-a-stick if you want to run on Windows, especially a desktop OS (happy to be proved wrong though). Most of the free (opensource) products are going to be built on a Linux base.

Does it really need to be self hosted? Something like dropbox would suffice fine for this normally unless it's some really odd stuff you're sharing between each other?

Windows based you will struggle a bit, VPN and shared folder?

Dropbox is fine but obviously limited in size...

DropBox Plus is £8/month for 1TB, though if you want each person to have their own login for sharing, that sounds more like Dropbox Business which starts at £10/month per person (2TB space).

Box is £3.50/month per user, minimum of 3 users and 100GB space.

Thanks... And understood...

Just seems a shame that a NAS type self hosted dropbox type solution does not exist should you have a Windows 10 box running as a server...

https://syncthing.net/ appears to have a Windows server but doesn't look the easiest thing to setup if you're not happy with some command line stuff : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QcO8ikxzxA

https://www.seafile.com/en/download/ also appears to have a Windows server and claims to be free for 3 users
