Self-hosting status

Right, should be a simple one for someone to help me with.

I'm hosting some photos on an FTP set up on my computer. It won't be on all the time, as I value my sleep....

I was looking toward setting up a page on my ISP's space in order to indicate whether my computer was on based on a ping or whatever. The other option is for me to change the page every time I turn my computer on, but I can't be bothered to do that. So, can anyone suggest an automated way for me to do it? Based on using the ISP webspace (Eclipse), so no PHP or whatever I don't think

Any help for my laziness appreciated (I'm being nice enough hosting the photos rather than making it completely simple for everyone all the time)

if you have a router that supports it you could use a dynamic DNS. Should be somewhere in your router control manel if it does

host an image on your pc and embed it <img> tags in a html page on your webspace. if the image doesn't show, your computer is off.

also why won't you host the pictures in an online gallery? or your webspace?

Only get about 20mb, not enough for about 20 peoples photos for a week

if you have a dynamic IP address as most people do then putting the image on your webspace wont work because the location will be different every time you connect to the internet

I've got a DynDNS address, that's the way I'm linking people to my computer anyway

create an account with dyndns. Install an app on your pc that updates the dynamic dns database on the internet with your current IP address (if it changes).

Yeah, I've got that set up on my router, but that doesn't actually tell anyone whether my computer's up and running...

Hmm.. some kind of web-based site checker that you can integrate with your page, which will tells your users if your domain/ip is online or not....

What's confusing about an image that says "My PC is on" with an alternate for the text of "My PC is off"?

or even better have a blank image as your pc is obvsiouly on as the site is working, and then if your pc is off then have alternative text say pc is off so no pictures or whaever

But that would involve me changing the image manually when I turn my computer on and off, I'm trying to get some kind of automatic system status
