I'm going to start building a new pc, my first PC in about three years. I'm planning on staying in the upgrade loop and so therefore require a "decent" case. I have no-idea what my needs are other than I would like it to last me several iterations of PC over three/four years (until I finish uni) and that I'd like it to be relatively quiet (as it will be kept in my room), although the latter is not essential.

So...What case should I buy and why and Why did you buy the case that you currently own?

Lian Li v2000. Because its superbly built, its a Lian Li, it looks great and its supremely huge! :D

Funny you should say that, because I was looking at the Lian Li site last night and saw it and went "OoooOooOoooo". I wasn't too keen on the silver though! The black one is definitely an option, thanks. Anyone else?

That is true, they are normally top right (going by that picture), but still it's a pretty poor show for a case of it's size!

cable have not chnaged but who really uses the headers?

Can very easyerly mod them to be long and at the same time brade them so they gone.

Mine are removed as i don't need them

Top left you mean? But as I say, its not a problem ive come across with mine. There are a few niggles with the case, but they are due to me trying to fit so much into the case.

1 niggle that they can chnage and that to allow you to be able to mount a DVD at he base of the drive bay at the front. The mount for the bezle has new metal there it just cut off so you can't mount it!

Yes, sorry, top left. The SPCR review looked a lot more promising.

Jon, what are you wanting to fit into your exactly?

I am toying with the idea of buying a new one just for a server and lots of 500GB HD's in there. 12 in the base and 6 in the front. So just need to find a decnet raid card to alow me to run 18 drives!!!

9000GB - 9TB

Think i can live with that for a bit

Well it's going to be a pretty minimal system at first, a basic C2D system with hopefully an 8800GTS, but I'm planning on fitting four HDD's and would like room to add more.

Guys that is a v2000, not the v2000+. ;)

The cables are longer in the + and later v2000 versions.

With a V series always buy the + version.

Just thought I would point that out.

Yeah, he seemed to have a lot more slack on his header cables.

I would maybe look at adding some kind of water cooling in the future, just to say "I have" and for the experience, not because I would necessarily need it. The only thing that worries me now, is lugging it too and from uni. It looks 'king huge!

I'm running 10 HDDs in a V2100B+ at the moment, 8 in the lower chamber and 2 in the 5 1/4" bays. You can get 12 in the bottom easily but I removed the mounting rails and suspended the drives from bungee cord instead as they were causing the case to resonate. The cabling's a bit tight and I wouldn't want to do it with anything other than SATA but it's do-able.

The top bays are obviously easier to deal with but there's no airflow to speak of so the drives can get a bit toasty. The bottom's not much better to be honest, there's a fan at the front but the baffles and drives block the airflow to the back bays.

For 18 drives you're really looking at one of the Areca RAID cards, they do 8, 12, 16 & 24 port ones but you'll need a spare 16x PCIe slot as they're 8x cards. 24 ports could cost you in excess of £1000  so 2 x 8 ports might be a better bet with one of the Asus boards that have 4 16x slots.

Bed pillow

My mobo will be a Intel Bad axe BX2 or the BX3. CPU be a X6800 with a 1333 mod so it's deualting already and then oc'd to 4ghz on air. This will go pretty quick as does my current rig of same spec.
