Sellers internet got cut off too early

So me and my partner are buying a house together. I cancelled my VM as it's not available at the new address. My girlfriend has Plusnet 300Mb fibre at her house in contract, they said they could move it to our new address for a fee. But they said if we took a new contract they would waive the fees. So we signed up for 1Gb at the new address and gave them the date we are moving in, 2nd December.

However today my girlfriend got a call from the estate agents that the sellers Sky internet has been cut off already. Apparently Sky are refusing to compensate them and apparently we will have to compensate them?

I don't see how this is our issue, surely Plusnet have acted way too early and it's more than likely their fault.

What do we do in this situation?

We had the same, plusnet cut us off a week early. I wouldn't know the legal answer (solicitors would have seen this before) but I got plusnet to pay for a 4G dongle, airtime and also a months charge as compensation

My partner said she called Plusnet twice and they have said it's not their fault. I will be calling them tomorrow, but the account is in her name.

They're not going to pull out of the sale over it, and you owe them nothing. You gave Plusnet a date you were moving in, this would have sent a notification to Sky with the date on and they'd have had the chance to speak to Sky if the date was too soon. If they never got a notification then it's on Sky.

If it's disconnected because it's actually migrated to Plusnet then they can plug the Plusnet router in and use it.

Completely the sellers fault :D.

Ok so maybe not, but hear me out. We sold our house a couple of years ago we were on VM, our buyer was on VM and he arranged to have his services transferred before any of our paperwork was through. VM informed us of this - that someone was trying to switch out our services, the date that would happen on, etc - I told them no, not authorised, buyer can sign the papers and then organise that stuff.

So basically I find it hard to believe the sellers weren't notified by their ISP that this was happening and given ample opportunity to correct it. And in my scenario the same, if I had allowed my services to be turned off prematurely or on the wrong date, who would I really have to blame for that but myself?

It's crazy that they just cut it off without telling them at all.

Actually to follow up my last as well, when I tried to switch from Onestream to Shell BB (VDSL), just a regular change of provider at my own address, Onestream were notified that another provider was taking the services, emailed me about that, countered the deal too. It's really hard to believe sky wouldn't have tried to retain them or warn them their services were being tampered with.

We were not advised it was going to be switched off in any way, so I know for a fact that at least Plusnet don't inform you.

When it happened they say there is nothing they can do, to reinstate the line would take a week (!) so I went with the 4G option. Didn't even tell our buyers as it was a faff but it happens and as mentioned we weren't going to stop the sale over it.

If it's cut off does that mean your contract has started? if so then youre paying for it? given the correct router the sellers could use "your" internet. If it hasn't started yet then why was Sky cut off? sky or plusnet error with the start date of the new owner? That gives you the answer as to who has to deal with it.

Either way you arent likely to sort it within 10 days so you either do nothing or give them some money (?) to go away and deal with the clean up later.

Good way to mess with someone you hate...

Thanks guys.

My girlfriend is really worried about it and thinks she's caused it and messed up. I'm trying my best to convince her that this isn't her fault and she hasn't done anything wrong.

My mate described her as the opposite of a Karen :D
