Hello.

I've sold a high value collectable on ebay beyond my better judgement after the last issue I had where they switched a working computer part with a faulty and PayPal sided with them.

The buyer paid right away, respectable feedback but should the matter arise again. Is there anything I need to do beyond sending it insured, correct customs forms and tracked. I don't want them to claim its incorrect or switch items again and make off with my money, which I can't chase as they're in the states.

Probably should. If asked this before but I spent a while reading seller protection. Then I came across countless threads of sellers being stung.

Be prepared to ditch your PayPal account after emptying it if you're insisting in selling on eBay.

There's no recourse PayPal can actually take if your PayPal account is empty if/when they decide to reverse funds other than put your account into a negative balance and ask you to pay them.
How do you mean sorry.

I've probably sold over the years around £10000 all together, this item alone is £2500. And sure there's been a few people claim things didn't turn up and I just posted at the box with no proof of postage and I suck it up. Normally I send tracked if its above 20 quid. But I really stepped back when I lost £400 before. I had to top up my PayPal as I withdrawn the money not thinking it'll bite me.

I'd guess considering the number of transactions eBay does it still only a tiny fraction of people who are scammed, at the end of the day you have the money, just withdraw it from PayPal asap.
The reason behind the sale was a huge car repair bill otherwise I would never have sold it. That's why I'm So scared too because without this I wouldn't have enough to repair the car right away, I'm happy to withdraw the money but now I think I've goofed up somehow. I've posted to USA, Canada, Japan etc before no issues. But never of this value.

Remember that story of the $65k collectable pokemon card that went "missing"

That's the story that worries me too

Why didn't you sell locally and cash on collection?

I mean most collectors would be willing to travel.

Selling abroad is risky as it adds in so many more layers of where it can go wrong.

Personally I'd want cash on collection. You say you got £2500 for it. After eBay, PayPal and postage and insurance costs you will be lucky to walk away with what £2k.

I'd rather sell locally for £1800-£2200 than abroad just because that's where the biggest market is.
There was no local interest really or the people who offered, sorry to judge, weren't the collector type and more jump you for it. I shouldn't make assumptions but when one person messaged to collect right away and his job was f the police. Yeah not for me haha.

Haha yeah it's all sent now. More fool me.

To answer people's curiosity, it was some rare pokemon cards, which is why I used that example previously.

Just scared they'll say it doesn't match and swap or some nonsense

For those who suggested sell locally, that was my first action, however after barely any genuine interest or attractive offers I used ebay as a last resort.

The money has been withdrawn now. I've calculated thst I've probably sold £19000 worth of goods on my account over the years with this included and only had 1 issue, whether that helps me I doubt it due to what seems a generic and automated system people can fool around with.

Well my gut feeling was correct. Card arrived today via express mail and now they're claiming its a fake item. Which it is not. But now I'm utterly capping myself.

Half of it is still in there. Half I've withdrawn. I can top up the account but that's not the point. I'm currently down a large amount and my item. I don't want debt collectors or anything involved.

So I've spoken to ebay via the phone and you're all right. Their returns system is flawed massively.

The case is open at the moment. If he escalates it, even though on one messaged I've got him to self incriminate himself, ebay would still side with him, he would get the item and keep the item if I don't agree to a return.

So I'm absolutely fuming. Withdrawing my money now.

But can that lead to a ccj.

We are talking about £2400. It isn't chump change to PayPal.

If you've got him to self incriminate on an eBay message then you can show that on PayPal's dispute resolution. What exactly did he say that was incriminating?
He said "
I cant be anymore transparent. I repeat, I did not completely understand the ad/description"

So he is at fault when trying to claim not as described now surely.

To confirm, it was described perfectly.

It's a classification for some of the most expensive cards

I learnt all this thanks to logan paul and lockdown....
Is that the one that went "missing" in the post, worth like £65k

Anyway, my paypal remains minus, I won't be addressing that until the case is closed.

eBAY agent on the phone pretty muched confirmed their system is open to manipulation.

Paypal agent, less helpful, kept saying sorry. I have 90 days to clear until they pass it on. Dunno what that means, or the implications, but we're planning a mortgage application in June and don't want negative things on my file. Likewise I'm not handing out cash for a lack of protection.

Agreed with big boy pants. Stop crapping yourself thinking PayPal have any actual legal way of forcing you to pay up, they do not. They're definitely adept at scaring fools into it though, as you're showing.
If the buyer was local, he'd be getting what's coming.

However, this is a situation ive never faced, and its not something I'm Enjoying either. But if I have to leave an account minus 2k + and not worry so be it.

Agreed had this years ago for a macbook over 900 I just cleared the paypal account and got a few letters from the usual fake solicitors never came to anything. Even made a new account and nothing happens. They have very little actual recourse. You need to decide if you want to fight this or roll over and take it from the scammer and PayPal.

If he was simply trying it on and has misunderstood what he was buying just tell him that's fine if he sends you the real card back and you confirm its legit and undamaged then you refund no problem but if it turns up fake or damaged you will call the local police department for his area and report fraud and they will get a visit. You update PayPal of the dispute and that law enforcement are involved and let it play out. Chances are it' some turd in his mums basement and will crap himself.
Tempted to just change the address on my PayPal to a random one lol
