Selling iMac...

It's a little early to be at the cooking sherry isn't it? :p
OS X is a nice diversion and I'd buy it to dual-boot with, if Apple sold it for use on any PC. (Yes, I know I could buy a Mac and dual boot with Windows but I don't want to pay their rip-off prices.) But when I want to get some serious work done, with no fuss then it has to be Windows. And another thing is the way that OS X handles mouse acceleration for the pointer - I just can't get on with it and there is no way to make it behave like Windows or Linux. A lot of Mac users have strong opinions about this it seems, many proclaiming it to be better than the Windows way, and others also sharing my views on it. Perhaps the next OS X release will have the option to disable mouse acceleration, and maybe an 'up' button :) But no, they will just add more glossy features and design some new buttons I expect.

I thought that same, but then I tried to price up a similarly specced PC to a Macpro and found the Mac to be very good value.

I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion :) Anyway the only Mac which would be suitable for me is the Mini, because I would want to keep my existing monitor. They are horribly expensive for what they are. £399 would get you a better-specced Dell, which would also come with an LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse for the price.

Incidentally does anyone else find that the Apple UK web store doesn't display properly in Firefox?

In Firefox and Windows?

It works for me in IE7. If it's just me then it's probably something I've messed up in Firefox, like I adblocked something I shouldn't have done :)

edit - yep fixed it now. :o

I was using FF2 on a Mac, I'll see what it's like in Windows as well though. One sec.

Edit: No need it would seem.

Store looks fine here. And from my quick browse I can't find a Core Duo machine from Dell for £399.
Not a Core Duo perhaps. But I see for £379 you can get an A64 3500+ machine with a DVD writer and a 250GB hard drive - not to mention a 17" LCD monitor etc. Compare that to the £399 Mini with a tiny 60GB hard drive and a DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive. It should be £299 :)

You can alter it using SteerMouse (shareware..). I do know what you mean. When I was searching for a solution for the mouse acceleration, I came across so many annoying people with the attitude that the Mac way of handling it must be the best and anyone who prefers an alternative is wrong. That's the problem with a lot of Mac users, IMO. They get way too defensive when it comes to hearing legitimate concerns and valid negative opinions. Just look at a couple of the posts in this very thread . :p

I use a Microsoft mouse on Mac and if you install Intellipoint, it takes over from the Apple mouse settings and makes the pointer behave more like Windows.

An 'up' button would be nice but that's even gone in Vista now. You've just got 'back' instead. I think Leopard will be less glossy because it's going towards resolution independence and it seems the aqua buttons don't behave properly with that.

Yeah I know and that is a sore point with me too :) MS going down the Apple route of style over substance. Vista's new GUI is a horrible mess in my opinion.

So does it really work? :) Fancy having to pay $20 to get such a basic function though, which every version of Windows has already. Why Apple refuse to give its users the option to CHOOSE, baffles me.

Yeah - you can alter the acceleration factor or perform the ultimate luxury of turning it off entirely. There are various terminal tweaks and commands out there to do it but in my experience they either don't work or are really flaky - I've tried them all. Having to buy a $20 app does take the LOL, but it was worth it for such a fundamental annoyance. :o

If we're going to start down that road of having to pay for basic functionality that should be built into the OS . . . PDF export anyone? Burning data to DVDs?

What about themes, you need to buy ShapeShifter to change them with a Mac.

A free application I like is called UNO, which just applies a nice unified theme to the whole of OS X (removes the brushed metal interface as well as a few aqua nuances). A good theme shouldn't distract you by being either too ugly or to nice to look at IMO.

I think we can all agree that both WinXP and OS X Tiger are not feature complete out of the box and so it's silly for people to try and score points off of each other by listing them. Why do people (on both sides) always end up arguing and hijacking threads?

@gdc34, what particular things are irking you with using your Mac? There were a few for me when I started using my powerbook, but they were mostly fixed by a 3rd party app or just knowing how to do something a different way. Macs aren't for everyone though I guess (I can happily use WinXP or OS X though, I just have to flick a mental switch each time about how to use the other).

FYI: I sold my iMac G5 when the new Core Duo iMacs came out on ebay.

Sold for £909 which was good, as I only paid £930 for it anyway through HE discount :)
