Selling my laptop to replace desktop - spec me a very cheap gaming system :D (£150-£300)

If you'd rather keep the cost as low as possible go with whats above.

If you want more performance I'd go with the i3 2100 Surveyor specced earlier with a 5770 or something:

Slightly more but much better For gaming than other people have specced :p

*edit* it's £304.54 btw stupid iPad didn't copy the total price lol

KiiYzOo i really do like that build - i hope laptop sells cause that is at the very edge of my price range, i was trying to aim for ~£200 :(

If your overclocking then go with the 955 BE.

Here's some benchmarks (post 15). Each picture shows the 955 oc'd to 3.8GHz and then with stock speeds below.

Edit: The 955BE was being used with an Asus M4A89TD Pro, i3 2100 with an Asus P8P67, both with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 OC and 2x2GB Patriot Viper II DD3. Source is here but is in google translated from Polish.

Lots of different ideas but it all depends on how much you're ultimately going to be spending.

I suggest you come back when you have a definite amount.

i take it you are looking for a secondary gaming rig, because your not going to get anything better than your sig no matter what your laptop sells for.

also, what PSU are you planning on nicking from somewhere? a cheap PSU is a complete no-no.

just to confirm, you are salvaging a case, asrock n68c-s AM3 mobo, HDD, DVD and a PSU (depending on what one it is), and you only need what goes in the PC.

with £300 i would get:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £114.98
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £99.98
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £35.99
1 x Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £26.53
Total : £277.49 (includes shipping : FREE).

What case and PSU have you got?

KiiYzOo's spec is very good for near £300 if you can stretch that far and is the one I'd be going for. (Again assuming you've got a decent(ish) PSU).

For £250, this is what I've come up with.

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £114.98

AMD Athlon II X3 Tri Core 450 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £59.99

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £35.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS) £30.98

Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99

Total : £256.93 with free shipping

Coincidently, I've recently built a similar maching (Athlon II X3 and Sapphire 5850) and it plays BFBC2 at near max settings at 1920x1080. CPU unlocked to a quad core but wasn't 100% stable to I run it as an X3 @3.5GHz with the stock cooler.

Assuming that when you sell your laptop the buyer would want its HDD and DVD drive! :)

Yes i admit its a cheap 500watt psu, i know its bad - i could be sneaky and take the 850watt ocuk one from my brothers pc, which barely draws 200watt - i know the ocuk one is cheap too but its a bit better than the one i was gonna use, and that spec looks fine mate :) not sure if i need the cooler, i have a stock amd one that came with my phenom, though i duno how hot x4's get when overclocked :O

any chance of knowing exactly what 500W PSU it is, because there is huge variation in 500W PSU's

if its anything like the stock phenom II X4 cooler, your really going to want a new one, because the stock cooler only just keeps temps at a safe level, and makes a horriffic noise while it does it. my Phenom II X4 955 often reaches 65C (3C over the max operating temp) and the fan spins to 6850RPM

almost forgot to ask, this case your going to be salvaging, do you know how much space there is between the mobo and the side panel. i ask because i dont know if there will be room for the processor cooler

Its a massive case, really cheap but a full tower, will do fine :P its bigger than my antec 900 put it that way, and the psu isn't even branded XD got it new from ebay for £15 a few weeks ago to build an even more budget rig

Bin it. Really, don't go there. You're hooking a lot of expensive equipment up to it, and if something goes wrong with the PSU it could potentially damage other components. You really don't want to skimp on the power supply.

ok, your going to want a new PSU then. i cant stress enough how important a good PSU is. here is an example of a bad 550W PSU attempting to draw the power it was rated for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XglUdm25Bxo&NR=1

so, with that in mind, heres a new spec:

1 x Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5850 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £114.98
1 x AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £99.98

if you want to add a cooler to the mix, go ahead. the stock AMD fan isnt great, but it is sufficient

I can vouch for this, had a PSU blow twice, and the motherboard and components were all fine, thanks to a decent PSU in killing itself before it would take out anything else in my system, I was so happy when I had a replacement and it all worked fine!
