Hi,

I'm building a system for someone on a budget and am getting them an AMD Sempron 3400+ 64 bit cpu. This runs at or about 2ghz, I think. But I'd like to explain to the person (non-computer literate) what speed this cpu is comparable to in terms of a pentium 4.
Would I be right in assuming a 3.4ghz P4?

thanks,
Ives

I suspect it'll be a bit closer to a 3.2 given that a Sempron is a stripped-down Athlon (this is possibly a load of rubbish so wait for someone competent to confirm/deny).

You can roughly compare the PR ratings of the A64 to the P4 and the Sempron to the Celeron

That is the Sempron 3400+ will be like a Celeron 3.4GHz

Possibly something like a 2.8GHz P4, more like a 2.6GHz P4

The Sempron 64 is a cut down Athlon 64

The far better CPU for the money would be the A64 3000+ for £5 less

The A64 3000+ would be equivalent to about a 3.0Ghz Pentium, but the Sempron 3400+ would only be as fast as a 2.6Ghz P4, give or take..

As mentioned above go for the A64 3000+ if the board won't take you over budget (Asrock Dual Sata II for £50 is a bargain).

If you've already got the motherboard then go for the AMD Athlon 64 3000 Newcastle 130nm (Socket 754) - Retail (CP-070-AM) @ £69+VAT

If not then I'd go for Socket 939 as Socket 754 stopped with the A64 3700+ for desktop CPUs (there is a mobile A64 4000+ on Socket 754 but no dual core CPUs)

The lack of cache will also reduce multi-tasking performance

once again with the sempron hating

i hate this in hardware

Who hates semprons? I just pointed out that they run slightly slower than the A64's. I think the semprons are excellent chips, in the right enviroment, but if you can get better performance for same money, why wouldn't you?

i know its a bit of a thread hijack....sorry :D

but just wondering, in that case

is a Sempron 2800/3000 64 gonna be faster than say a 3200+ XP chip?

Not really. The sempron 64 2800+ runs at 1.6ghz and has only 256k cache.

Although it has the HTT and an integrated memory controller it is also losing out on 600mhz in terms of raw clock speed which makes it slower.

a 3400+ is faster than a 2.6ghz p4 - its as fast as the a64 2800+ i would say, it also runs a lot cooler and overclocks better than the newcastle cores

however i personally would get the 3100 and overclock but hey, each to there own

and btw it wasnt really aimed at you, its just seems to be a general thing on these forums that if something isnt this or that then its bad, when it really isnt :)
