Ok so I have my ntlworld (Virgin Media), email setup on my iPhone.
However I am only able to SEND emails from it, when I am on my home network via WiFi.

If I switch onto the cellular data (i.e. on 3G), then I am not able to send emails and the only way to send emails is if I were to change my smtp server from the ntlworld one, to the O2 one.

I will be out of country next week and I hope to send email via the hotel WiFi, so is there anyway to configure it so that I can do so?

Im guessing that you cannot send emails if you are not registered with that ISP (e.g. at home I am on ntlworld and thus can authenticate successfully from on my home ISP, and I am an O2 user and as such can authenticate for O2 smtp - Im guessing!).

Any advice or help peeps? Thanks.

So basically so long as I have entered the correct login details for SMTP it should work you're saying?

I don't see why it wouldn't! Never heard of people being unable to access NTL email from different ISP's, my Dad has his NTL account set up via Outlook at work and he can send and receive just fine.

(NTL/VM should be the same thing)

Perhaps there is an option to enable access via other clients somewhere in the VM website settings? I know on GMail you actually have to enable IMAP or POP3 (if that's the correct term) in order to use other clients to access email.

Not sure tbh!

Hmm let me check into this.

My friend had countless problems trying to check his ntlworld on his iphone. Could always receive but never send. Got him to change to gmail in the end.

My ntlworld works fine...setup was all normal too. Let me have a look and i'll get back to you if i did anything which isnt obvious.

I have NTL email and if I use my O2 internet connection it won't send email.

I set the NTL email up on my iPhone and could send email but never receive any.

The SMTP servers will have an IP whitelist to prevent spammers using them as an open relay, so it restricts connections to their own network which is why you can't send via the NTL SMTP server if you're connected via 3G.

The easiest way around it is to find out if it supports authentication, if it does then you can send emails from any connection.

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Host Name: smtp.o2.co.uk
User Name: [email protected]
Password: youro2password

Your Advanced settings should look like this...
Outgoing Settings
Use SSL: Off
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 25

Use those settings, thats what I need to use for my NTLworld account to send outside WiFi. It shows as being received by [email protected]
