I thought I knew all the implications of doing this from your ISP -

eg

1) max recipients per email limits
2) emails per day limits
3) avoid obvious spam words like drugs
4) include coherant text
5) dont send to honey pot traps or emails that users will mark as spam

however a VERY expensive consultany has told a customer of mine that you cannot just send out 1000's ( in their case 200 0 - 4000 ) emails as they will get marked as spam by some of the big spam filters, and they must buy some expensive software to send this stuff out...

I know little for sure but assume a lot...

He is an no nothing thinking he knows a lot (I assume), and as long as you are aware of my 1 - 4 points there will not be an issue

My question is... Is he talking crap? as long as I dont break rule 1 to 4 i can send 10's of 1000's of emails?

You will run into max recipient per mail issues but other than that as long as you are not including everyone else's e-mails in the CC it should not matter.

You should ensure that you have a valid SPF record setup for the domain you wish to send from. Our customers use IIS SMTP on their servers to send out bulk mail campaigns, and most of them don't experience any issues.

Also ensure that your PTR record matches the FQDN you have setup in the mail app.

Send them out in batches ? We got temporarily blocked by hotmail as they thought we were sending out spam when sales decided to email clients/customers in bulk.

I have some customers that bulk e-mail to around 2000 customers and don't run into problems. As above, just needs a bit of thought about setup and timing (ie will you upset other people if clog-up mail servers and/or connectivity during the middle of the business day?)

One alternative is to use a service like Campaign Monitor - 55 USD/month for 2500 to 5000 subscribers and unlimited messages to them. CM provides some nice stats and report on click-through etc which some people find useful.
