Hi,

I have a friend who lives in Prague. Obviously the cigarettes are dirt cheap over there. For the cost of what I would pay for 200 in the UK you can get 600 over there.

Is it legal for him to buy cigarettes and post them to me? This might be a stupid question to some people - but I am honestly unsure as to whether this is legal or not. Thought I would clear it up.

Thanks

I thought it might be :/

Dons feel free to delete if you think my next question is inapproprate.

If I was to ask my mate to do it - what would happen if they were found by whoever I wouldn't want to find them? What process do they go through to get found? Xrays?

Thanks

Xrays , sniffer dogs

If they are found and you are lucky they will be confiscated, if unlucky you will be charged with tax evasion

Cigs from Prague do not even come under EU regulations re personal import ( duty free ) , from most EU countries the recommended limit is 3200 , Prague has the same limits as outside the EU ( 200 ) as they do not meet minimum EU taxation levels

Your normally OK for a few times then , they will figure you out courier firm normally has a quiet word to customs ......... you then either have to pay the tax or you don't get them. Well thats what happened to me a few years back thing might have changed now ...........

Best bet would just be to wait until he's next coming over and have him bring as many as he's allowed, and give him £20 or take him out on the razz for his troubles.

Of course, that'll only work if he comes to England from time to time - if this guy is *from* prague or lives their properly full time that's not going to be the case obviously...

He moved there last year. He only comes back every few months. Might give it a try - dunno. Sounds a bit risque

/spoil sport

Could just give up smoking and not need to worry about the prices of them any more :p :D

1st of July I am quitting.

Until then, you can take your "stop smoking" lines, and... well... shove them where nobody else can see them :p

yes its legal to send cigarettes through the post in the eu, as long as the duty is paid in the country they were bought based on the Universal Postal Convention dated September 15,1999 - which we ratified.

that won't stop her majesty's customs seizing them (illegally in EU law) though if they find out.

re the EU this was tested in court recently and declared illegal

The Czech is an odd one as, where cigs are concerned, they do not class as EU as the minimum EU duty level is not met

wrap em in happy birthday paper ull be fine

Where did this urban myth about Birthday presents start?
Somebody has a lot to answer for.
It doesn't matter if the item you're sending is for a Birthday, for Christmas or just a package - it is still fully taxable.

Just because you're sending a birthday gift doesn't magically make it tax exempt.
And with all the people out there these days after making a "quick buck" I wouldn't be sujrprised if a package wrapped and marked as "Birthday present" would actually be more likely to be stopped than a normal package.
