Sennheiser HD555 - WOW!!

I have a slight other problem in that I have a big head. Every set of Goldrings or Sennheisers (including HD555s) I've tried squeezes my head just a little too much.

So even if I did get some HD600s or HD580s, I would probably be looking for something with their sound quality that was as comfortable as my old Medusas. Grrr.

I bought my hfi780s for £110 (can be had for around £140 now) after a thread on headfi hinted they were almost the sound of the £1000 edition 9s it does get very addictive when sound is so good suddenly the confusion of sound is not there just perfect seperation and stunning texture/timbre ,i dont know if the 3d effect is normal in good cans or an ultrasone thing but thats amazing you can hear one section of instruments perfecly seperated and yet maybe 20ft beyond that sound but in the same direction another section also seperated with its own texture ,this is repeated all around you in other directions it really is a jaw dropping experience

If you like Rock/Metal, the Metallica S&M live album is quite good, as there's a lot of things going on, so seperation really makes it more appreciable.

Can anyone recommend any good songs for listening to which show off a decent headset?

I just listened to Sadeness Part 1 by Enigma and it was awesome :)

Rachmaninov Piano concertos are pretty good if you're into Classical. Also:

The Prodigy - Girls
Hot Chip - Shake A Fist

Or get hold of some 96khz material like NIN's The Slip (if your kit can deal with it).

I think 580's are better than 555's as they are close to 600's :)

I have this XRCD, Susan Wong - Fly me to the moon album and sound quality just unbelievable. I always use that CD when auditioning speakers, etc as i can hear where bass, piano, saxophone, etc placed :D

Snow Patrol - Run
Peter Ho - Cen Sin Hua
Guang Lian - Tong hua

All excellent music for testing your ears :D

Odd question but I've had some HD580's for about 8 or so years, how do you think they'd compare to the 555's?

They're in a different league to the HD555. The HD580s were Sennheiser's top end headphone prior to the launch of the HD600s. They have the same drivers as the HD600s

The difference between those and the HD555s only really becomes apparrent given a good source and amp though. Chances are if you heard the HD580s or HD600s straight out of a soundcard the HD555s would fare quite well in comparison, as they're easier to drive.

I agree that the HD580s are margnially easier to drive than the HD600s. Trying both with the same amp, the HD600s seemed to be a bit light on bass.

Good info cheers :) I'm going from onboard/192kbps MP3's to a Xonar D2 and FLAC through foobar so should be able to see some decent results, it;s quite a travesty that I've been using them on onboard audio and cheap end creatives :(

I've got the Senn PC350 and love it (would like to know about this Bass mod?) but am starting to notice the lack of Bass in them now.

How big an improvement would the 555's be over the 350?

Also I understand they are open headphones, how loud are they for late night listening, say playing heavy rock at normal volumes for this kind of music?

Don't want to upset those that sleep.

Now if only you'd all drop those HD555s and get some decent hi-fi headphones :p
I hope you're not talking about defecting from the Senn!!! ;)

TBH the 555's are nice phones. Upgraded to 595's and if i'm honest preffered the 555's presentation.

Now on a set of 650's and love them! :D

Recently converted, thanks to the guys in here.

Went from razer barracudas to Sennheiser HD595 - You already summed what a good experience hearing them for the first time is.

Ive rencently purchased some 555's for my dad - And i must admit they sound incredible as you say.....

When I first got my 595's I thought they were pretty meh, but after they burnt in I was amazed.

I honestly thought my CX300 in-ears were better at first, then when I went back to using the CX300's a few months later (just to compare) I ended up having to replace the 300's because of how bad they seemed. Picked up some nice Koss KSC75's for portables instead. :)

Ok so what do you guys prefer to listen to your Senns or your Hifi speakers?

I'm just comparing them back to back and I have to say my speakers are better, but they are Polk Audio Monitor Series 2's and new they probably cost 10 times more than these headphones.

Test tracks provided by Mistabishi, Damage and Greed are awesome tracks!
