Sensible V6 for less than 2k?

170bhp, but same torque as 328 (give or take couple of lb/ft)

Sorry, should have been more clear, Mazda 323 2.0 V6, 147bhp, and a lovely car, just not quite big enough, and nowhere near fast enough! :(

Still on the lookout for decent BMW's though, not many in my area.

ignore all of the above ( unless it spec's this car coz i cant be arsed to read through all the " buy a mondao v6 " comments from fox) what you need is a nice alfa 156v6 you can pick them up for sensible money, and so long as they have a nice stamped service book and regular cam belt change there as safe as houses........

Love the Alfa's, mate who's an ex Rover salesman's now an Alfa salesman/manager, so could get a decent one through him, but without a hatch, it's totally impractical! :(

I'd recommend the mazda 323f 2.0l V6. 147bhp, only 1150kg and a low center of mavity.

Designed by Porsche and tested on the Nurbergring.

I only have the 1.8 four pot (nearly 170k miles) but it handles wornderfully and is fairly brisk. Plus it's a Mazda so should never go wrong!

Test drove one the other night, lovely to drive, nice and solid, but very flat, even once I got it up around 5/6000rpm, it never felt at all fast, but did pick up nicely in 4th at 10mph! :(

Am going to try and find a Vectra V6 and Mondeo V6 local to take out for a spin, and possibly a Civic 1.8 Vti too (mate's got one but as he's now had it for a year, it drives like a bag of nails!!!).

Have now been offered a Rover 200 BRM for less than £1500, slightly impractical with only 3 doors, but I always had a soft spot for that big orange mouth, but I'm sure everyone here will talk me out of it! :p

One's a straight 6, and the other's a 4 cylinder, but I'm going to have a look at the 2 cars on the bottom of this page this morning anyway, as they're on my doorstep - http://dealerservices.autotrader.co.uk/77460/budden_stock.htm :)

Drove them both this morning, and much prefer the BMW. Even though it's 4 years older, and has done double the miles, it's the much nicer and tighter of the 2 to drive, and the power delivery's better too.

My heart's saying BMW, but my head's saying Vectra, ideally need to drive a Mondeo V6 and Vectra V6 to compare them too, hopefully they're more exciting than the 2.2 Vectra, same as the ZX V6, just felt a bit flat! :(

Avoid the vectra like it has AIDS. They are chain driven and Vauxhall devised a very fragile way to lube the chain and it can block very very very easily, causing engine death - read up on them.

The BMW is nicer anyway

Thanks for that, will have a read up on that site.

BMW is far nicer, just I'm going back in years over what I'm driving now, and paying at least a grand extra for the privilege, not quite sure that's what I want to do!

Still really need to test drive the ST24, see if that's any good.

To be totally honest, yes im a "fanboy".. but I really only would have a CDX 2.5V6 Vectra - the rest - like its been said, have their problems =]

I prefer the looks of the SRI/GSI over the CDX I'm afraid, can't beat a nice subtle bodykit (SRI) or a not so subtle (GSI)!

Still need to try out the V6 version in any form though, after not being particularly impressed by the performance of the 2.2 16v, and I'm comparing that to a 90bhp diesel! :p

I'll list the rest if you want.

Lifeless steering feel
Lots of rattles

I agree with the above with regard to the 2.2 I drove, it didn't quite want to go where I was steering it toward!

I can't find a sensibly priced 5dr GSI anywhere near to me, or I'd love to take one for a test drive. A friend of a friend's supposedly got a V6 SRI up for sale, so I can hopefully try that out, and hope it feels better to drive than the 2.2, shouldn't be hard!

Thanks for taking the time to expand upon your experience of the car, much appreciated. :)

Test drove a V plate ST24 today, was much more impressed by it than I was by the Vectra, although that's slightly unfair on the Vectra as it was only a 4 pot.

Hardly any rattles, picked up nicely, still not exactly fast, but the fastest I've driven so far, nice. :)

Mates Vectra sold at the weekend too, typical!

Good lad :D

Good haggling point - one which I should've used  - is to check if the IMRC is working. A new one from Ford is £140.

This is the Inlet Manifold Runner Control that opens up the secondary inlets at approx. 3500 RPM. Take it for a drive, wait till warm, and hit about 30mph in 2nd (revs should be about 3000 RPM). Floor it. There should be a nice grin on your face as the secondaries open up and that rev counter needle flies round toward the redline.

If it's not working, you may find the car struggling to get over 5000 RPM.

If you knew this already, then I hope I served as a reminder ;)

Hope it's as nice as it looks!

There definitely appeared to be an extra little surge of power above 3000/3500rpm, and it revved all the way to 6000rpm relatively easily, so hopefully it's working OK! :)
