Hi guys,
I just wondered what you would do if you stumbled across sensitive information about all employees on an 'unprotected' network?
I'm asking this question because i was on my bosses computer, when I 'accidently' opened up 'My network places' under the start menu. Here I found probably around 10 folders, most of which i wasn't allowed to view. But there was one i was able to double click into. In that folder were various files and folders. I noticed one folder called 'Staff' Curiosity got the better of me, so i opened it up. Inside were files which were obviously our new contracts that had been signed just a few months before. Should I keep my mouth shut and pretend i never saw them? Or should i tell them that there network is 'unsecured' and its allowing anyone on the network to see other folks contracts?
Im in a bit of a pickle!

Gob shut. You shouldn't have clicked on them.

Also you never know when something else interesting may get put there and you won't be able to see it any more :p

So you're wondering if you should mention that you were browsing around your bosses computer looking at things you shouldn't have touched in the first place?

1 of 2 things will happen:

1. Your boss will be impressed for your honesty and so on.

2. "Security - can you escort this man from the building please"

that is true, the boss sounds like he needs to understand how hes computer works though.

I would be fuming if I got sacked or a warning for telling him I found loads of documents.

Oh, and keep gob shut ;)

keep stum
tbh we've access to all kinda stuff at work that can effect everyone (even people we know) but we're bound by the law and contracts. must not go looking and if you DO see anything then don't tell anyone.
also if you catch some bugger using the network to store their holiday photos take a copy and delete the orginals. backups can be arranged for a "fee"

So, you were on your boss's PC (for whatever reason), and started snooping around in files which you had no reason to access but presumably he does... maybe I'm missing something but where is the security issue? You went snooping, you've done wrong. I think owning up to it lands you in the **** to be honest!

nah, im allowed on the computer, as he was away, and i needed to do stuff on it. I have previously told him that peoples names, addresses, bank account numbers and sort codes were there for each department to see. Nothing was done about this. Personally i feel slightly uneasy that my details are available to other departments.

How do you know he does not have access to those folders, you said you could not get into some folders but into this one.

Sounds like security permissions on network shares.

But yeah keep your gob shut

Kimbie

Ive since tried to access the same folder but cant get into it now. Why would this folder be open one day, but closed the next?
