seo - comments on forums

a common thing i see to help improve a sites page rank is to post comments on blogs/forums. what i don't understand though is that almost all seem to have the rel='nofollow' property making it completely pointless surely?

Not all search engines take notice of nofollow. There's talk of Google ignoring it completely as well, to prevent the 'PR sculpting' that some sites were doing. Xrumer is the leading piece of seo forum spam software... and it costs a decent bit so i'd imagine it does something.
