Separate storage for OS.

For my first build I was thinking of have my OS stored on a separate drive than everything else. Is this a common thing to do? If so do you guys have any reconsiderations on what to use?

Here is what I was thinking of using:

1 x Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU)= £65.99

I'm going to get Windows 7 for the OS.

For general memory, would a SSD have much better performance than a HDD?

Yeah, a 250gig SSD for your OS as well as your drivers etc is more than enough space. The 2TB is also ample for your other software and games/backups etc. And yes a SSD has much better performance than SATA HDD plus there a lot quieter.

How much local storage do you require?
Do you have a NAS?

I don't have a NAS but I think 2TB is more than enough for now at least. My laptop has 500GB and I'm just outgrowing that now.
