The death of a teenage girl who police say was the fifth victim in a week of a suspected serial killer has left the inhabitants of a small rural American community living in fear.

Abby Tyler, 15, died in hospital on Saturday two days after she was fatally wounded and her father, Stephen Tyler, 48, was shot dead as they closed the family's furniture and appliance shop near the centre of the small town of Gaffney in South Carolina.
...
Bill Blanton, the Sheriff of Cherokee County, said investigators believe the killings are linked, and the search is on for a white man in his 40s, with salt and pepper hair, about 6 foot 2 and weighing roughly 14 stone.

He said all the victims were shot, but he would not say how the deaths were linked.

Scary stuff, not sure how I'd react if this was going on in my community. To cancel the 4th of July celebrations in America is imo, unthinkable. Wonder how long it'll be before someone gets mistaken for this killer and shot by mistake. Wonder how the killings are linked???

Sounds like a loner, a gun nut and someone who bears a long time grudge against society.

It will be only a matter of time before he is caught as even the most careful killers leave a trail of some sort but it's a concern that a small towm police department such as Gaffney's may not have thee resources to handle this.

If results are not forthcoming soon, the public might want federal assistance and the FBI could take over the investigation, if they haven't already.

What has killing people for a bit of fun got to do with a grudge against society?

Someone who has never had a happy family life looks at people who may have or who he believes to have and can be of the mindset that if he can't have then they can't.

He gets his satisfaction from killing that person.

Reminds me of that scene in "The Jerk" (Steve martin)

The U.S. has its fair share of nutters and , alas, lax gun control.....

Sounds like some crazy Brit trying to cancel Independence Day.

And on a more serious note ...
THIS IS WHY LEGALISED GUNS ARE BAD.

And on a less serious note ...
Anyone catch the piece on one of the news programs yesterday. It said that if you break down that you should not go knocking on doors asking for help as you are likely to get shot because people are scared.
WHAT IS IT WITH YANKS AND GUNS!?!?!?

Just reading that "experts" put the number of active serial killers in the USA at anyone time at between 50........................ to 300.

They might as well just say "****** if I know" and shrugged their shoulders for all the good that is.

Does that mean that UK has between 10 and 60 serial killers then? (we are roughly 1/5 of the population)
