I bring you a tale full of WTFery. Today I decided I would go an take some temps inside my case with an infrared thermometer, so I load up some benchmarks for half an hour then I opened her up. Upon looking inside, I saw a shocking sight! I saw this plastic cylindrical thing sitting on my GPU, then I looked at my Vantage and saw that one of the thumb screws was missing! I have a closer look and found that there is also a metal spring sitting on the PCB of the graphics card! How did that not cause a short? I still can't find the actual screw for the cooler so I must assume it is sitting there somewhere at the bottom. But, how did it not short it out? How is it still even working?

The more worrying factor is how long has it been like that? I took this picture on the 11th for my project log and it was there, look closely at the front of the GPU for the spring and you can see the bit missing from the top left of the Vantage!

Could be the thin layer of varnish on the card which could insulate the components, the spring managed to miss the crucial parts!

Or your just very lucky :)

I may be getting a nice 6970 to review from Gigabyte, in which case I will frame that card for the ridiculous amount of gaming hours and years of service it has given me!

WTF INDEED!

True, lets me know how well the heat sinks are performing though. If a heat or RAM sink is cool while the components are hot then something is wrong! Also allows me to find hot air pockets so I can fix my airflow to keep everything cool.

That truly is both very lucky and unlucky.

Possible explanation, doesn't look like its lying on any raised or out-lying bits of solder :p
