Hi All,

It appears my Clio 1.2 16v (2001) has some serious issues involving ABS to the point where I couldnt get home tonight,

What happens is when I am driving mainly up hills and go down a slight bump in the road the ABS will kick in and my car will break to a stop (I dont even touch the brake pedal).

It is only doing this on the left side or atleast it feels that way as the car is pulling to the left and it sounds like my car is skidding.

It has happend 4 times on the way home tonight and it feels quite dangerous since I have no idea when its going to happen or why its braking without me even touching the brake pedal.

I have read about this happening at low speed under braking (which has been happening) but never like this where I am just driving along as normal and the ABS kicks in!

-------------------

An Update on this:

Managed to get it home tonight with my Dad and the wheels locked up again and I put my head out the passenger window (he was driving) and noticed its the rear wheel locking up.

Anyway we took the rear brake all to bits tonight and cleaned it up (was fairly rusty and lots of brake dust over the ABS sensor)

Took it out for another drive and the problem seems to have gone,

The ABS ring itself was in perfect condition,

I will drive it with caution now and see if it happens again unless you guys have any advice.

Thanks, Sam

Well tbh the problem isn't likely ABS related, the ABS lamp will just be coming on because 1 wheel is locking and since the computer thinks thats just not right and its probably a fault its throwing the warning lamp on. I'm assuming drum brakes on rear?

My Dad was thinking that and yes it is drums on the rear.

Anyone adjusted the handbrake recently?

No the handbrake hasnt been touched at all, the only slight problem it has had the ABS cutting in at low speeds which is a common problem with the Clio's but I have never got round to looking at it. Thats why when it keeps locking up randomly I put it down to ABS since that was a slight problem before. But as everyone else has said who I have spoke to it shouldnt apply the ABS without touching the brake pedal should it?

Is it even possible for an ABS system to be able to supply braking force ??

Yep. Thay have a pump in the system, its there to re aply the breaking force to the wheel it dumped the preshure from, thats why you get the juddering pedal. However it shouldnt be able to randomly lock a wheel up unless theres a major electrical problem.

If it dose in again try pulling the ABS fuse out and see if that stopes it. if it dosnt than its not the ABS thats at falt

Thats the plan,

I am going to order the following tomorrow:

Rear brake shoes
Wheel bearings
Cylinder Repair Kit
Front ABS Rings

After inspection of the rear brakes they look a bit worse for wear so I am replacing the above just to be on the safe side and the front ABS Rings are rather corrupted and have needing changing for a while (they are causing the ABS to activate during low speed braking, this was ok though as you expected it!)

Thanks for all the replys so far...
