Serious advice

I am very sorry did not want this to happen. My grandson has just graduated as a teacher with top grades. Was hoping to get something special, My son his father bought him a Samsung 4K monitor. He cannot shell out any more money at the moment. I lent my grandson a Sapphire R9 290x Vapour-X OC 8GB which, i just purchased from Overclockers for myself. My grandson stated he was underwhelmed by it`s performance. Just to stop all this i wil say to him from my point of view It will the Matrix GTX 980 or nought. Thanking all very much indeed.
If he's disapointed with the Sapphire R9 290x Vapour-X OC 8GB, then he won't be much happier with the Matrix GTX980 considering at 4K both cards performance similarly...

He's just want something that's not quite there yet...even with a pair of 290x or 980, it ain''t gonna max out the graphic settings at 4K in the more demanding games such as Crysis 3...three cards are needed for better frame rates at those setting, and cost a fortune...

I thought he was a little kid. :p Show him the thread and he can specify his needs in person. Has to be better than you going to all the trouble and guessing for him. :)

A single 290x would be underwhelming. 8gb or not. You would need at least two, and this has been suggested several times in the thread.

He obviously doesn't know current tech and its limitations.

I will go along with everyone else and say, try 8gb 290x crossfire, but if the max you want to spend is the cost of the asus 980, then yeah, tell him to suck it up :)

I use 4 watercooled GTX 980s @4K and if I wanted to just use my system for just gaming I would switch to the 8gb 290Xs.

A single Matrix 980 will run Crysis 3 maxed @4k at about 12 fps.

On other games a 4gb card will run out of VRAM.

The best setup bar none for 4k is 4 Titans as they are smoother than the 980s or 290Xs but it is pointless looking at this option.

From someone with first hand experience of 4k and the many different cards that would run it best! :D

Hilarious. OK, what you need to do first of all is get one of these...

This isn't for your Grandson... he would no doubt be underwhelmed that it only hits 88mph before disappearing in a great big ball of light and fire. No, this is for you, to travel in to the future... let's say 5 years... and pick up a GTX 1280TI with 16GB VRAM, or an AMD 690X if they've figured out how to keep them running cool by then. Maybe then he'll be satisfied. But keep in mind it STILL won't run Far Cry 4 smoothly. Pick me up a Sports Almanac while you're there, thanks.

If he's just graduated as a teacher won't he be entitled to the £5K or so 'golden handshake'

Tell him to order an 8GB 290X himself and you'll get him one as a gift to Crossfire with.

Won't be able to run GTA 4 either.
