Serious PC problem

I just put together my new PC and something kind of unexpected happened...

These are the components, but, I doubt it matters.....

BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB ST3250620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache
Antec Solo Quiet Mini Tower Case
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
Intel Extreme D975XBX2KR BAD AXE 2 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

Basically I just decided to boot up my PC for the first time and I went to the bios and decided to check on my hardware.. That's when I realised my CPU was apparently at 72*C at boot... So I quickly opened my case and the fan was fine.. This left me puzzled.. Why would it be so hot?

Then suddenly the screen went white and had a burning in effect... :-/

I switched off the machine as quickly as I could and left it a few mins.... I turned it back on a second ago and the cpu is the same, but, not burning in effect it just froze so I turned it off again..

Does anyone have any idea what it is?
 
Reseat the Heatsink+fan+CPU. Make sure you've got good contact between HS and CPU, and that there is thermal paste between them.
 
Welcome to the forums :) As Deiwos said, it sound like there is bad contact between the CPU and HSF. Are you using the retail supplied heatsink unit? Did you apply thermal paste if necessary? Did you disturb any pre-applied thermal material if there was any? Is the HSF level? Try reseating it anyway although you may have to apply some new paste to it if it's gone funny :(
 
The fan is the standard intel one........ I think it is level, but, it's quite hard to tell on this thing.... Installing the thing was a bit of a challenge really. :-/

I'm hoping I don't need to buy some new thermal material. >.<
 
Thermal paste is not expensive but is also easy to apply to much.
The OEM HSnF should be ok! they are actully pretty good.
Make sure the four pins are fastend in nicely, fan is at the right RPM in BIOS.

That's a point- I think it was only the other week when I was reading about someones system overheating because the fan was running at something like 30 RPM when it should have been about 3000 RPM :D If it is that, you need to disable the Intel fan control thing in the BIOS (I forget what it is called) :)
 
It is running at 2000 RPM....... I thought maybe that was slow because of my past fans but I've been told otherwise. :-/
 
Ok I just attempted to push down the plug type things that hold the fan in place and the opposite corner came out.... After that just just decided to take it off completely....... Only problem now is for some reason I can't get the wire away from the mb to save my life.... It's really strange.... I've never had a problem with something like this before.

Also only half of the thermal material was disturbed in any way so I'm guessing it wasn't seated properly afterall. >.<

I just reseated the heatsink and fan and when I booted up the CPU was at 30*C it went up eventually to 50*C at which point it's crashing in the BIOS....... The fan is however spinning a lot slower now for some reason, it's only going at 700 RPM. :-/

I was having some problems getting the fan wire away from the motherboard, could I have maybe damaged it or something? >.<
 
Yup I cleaned it before putting on the new thermal compound.. :-/ Just now I turned off the option for the motherboard to controll the fan and it went to 1620 RPM this seems to keep the cpu at 51*C but just now I went to install windows and the screen just went white with strange lines like the first time I turned the PC on.
 
I was just then leaving my PC in the BIOS to see how long it would last before locking up and I realised that after a little bit when the cpu temp reaches 52*C the reading drops down to 2.39 GHz when it started at 1.40.... Is this common when a CPU is overheating....

I was also wondering what the default cpu voltage is... Maybe mines higher then it's meant to be for some reason?
