Hi,

Just finished my first build with the intention of overclocking but have fallen at the first hurdle!

Aftern loading up for the first time in windows decided to run OCCT straight away without any changes and temps hit 100 within 3 seconds.

Don't know what to do now, should I re-seat my heatsink or forget about overclocking?

any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Hi,

cpu is i7 930 and the heatsink is Titan Fenrir Xmas edition!

Yeah going to reseat the heatsink and see how that goes.

With temps I guess you mean CPU core temps, right?

Checking your heat sink is a good idea, but only if something is completely wrong with it (not all push pins locked in case of an intel system). If the thermal paste is not applied 100% optimal you should still not get that high temperatures.

In any case I would double check the bios settings (above all the CPU vcore voltage you give). If you use the voltage specified for your CPU it shouldn't get that hot.

I have attached some pics of the thermal paste that I have applied after removing the heatsink.

Does anyone think that i have applied the paste poorly and that this may be the reason for the high temps?

Cheers

How much of a difference does poorly applied thermal paste make? I used the spread method which apparently sucks so im wondering if its worth the hassle re-doing it.

I have now finally added the pics. The paste is Arctic Silver 5. Once I have the system running again I will provide a CPU-Z screenshot.

Cheers

If thats the paste fully spread then theres your problem, not enough!

With the heatpipe coolers its best to spread the TIM on the cooler to fill the gaps up, then a pea size on the CPU to spread out, the TIM needs to cover the entire surface of the CPU

Sounds stupid, but check you've plugged the fan in and that the BIOS is set correctly to control it (or not, as long as it's not disabled).

Having seen those pics, you need more TIM. AS5 doesn't spread very well either, and on a direct contact heatsink like the fenrir you always need a little extra. I'm normally in the blob, not spread camp, but I think a bit of both here would be beneficial.

100 within 3 seconds ?!

Mate, that sounds like either way too much voltage or a non-working fan more than anything.

Note : If the fan is plugged anywhere except the CPU_FAN header it -will not- react to the CPU getting hotter by appropriately upping it's RPM.

No way a heatsink is saturated in 3 seconds due to no fan, its the mounting of the heatsink definetly, even with not enough TIM i would'nt expect those temps.

We want to see BIOS settings (voltages to be specific)! It must be some massive voltage overshoot.

And remember this about the thermal paste:

Arctic Silver Thermal Compound Precautions:
1) Don't put it in your mouth.

:D
