Prequel coming this summer!

Promising a "glorious throwback to the golden age of first-person shooters," Croteam officially announced Serious Sam 3 this morning, noting a unique new feature: the ability to blast through the full campaign with up to 16 players.

16 player co-op campaign sounds sick. Liking the gfx style too - looks more gritty, unlike the bright colour-fest look of the previous games.

Who needs Duke Nukem? :)

16-player co-op sounds like a gimmick. Also sounds almost unworkable, unless they turn it into some kind of MMO...

How can you have a tightly scripted campaign experience with 16 players?

Well for a start it would be almost impossible to balance. With 16 players in a group fighting something, either

a) it's going to be like in an MMO where you have lots of boss monsters with insane HP that take forever to kill

b) players will plow through the game effortlessly, with mobs dying in 0.0001 seconds to the concentrated fire of 16 players

c) the game will have to find ways to kill the players every five seconds and have them respawn, like in a MP game.

Although 16 player co-op might sound like a good idea, in practice I personally can't think of an easy way to make it work.

And you can't think of any way it will work?

A is a positive for some people. The last boss in Serious Sam 1 was ridiculous. :p

Another way it may work is that there are 4 man squads at different points on the map all doing objectives to reach the final point, ala, super boss.

loved playing the first in our old office lans on a saturday, was in fits of laughter when we plowed through it

dont really care how they 'balance' it, as long as im in stitches the whole way through they can do what they want.

I also would like a change of game play with this shooter but preferably something different to the first two Serious Sam games. Will keep one eye on it ,though I'm not going to get my hopes up too much.

Sounds like you've never played any serious sam coop ever.

SSII at had 16 players, it worked, it was a lot of fun. IIRC the first also supported at least 8, I remember being at a lan in 2001 and it had a load of us laughing our heads off :D
Just because it can support doesn't mean you need to, there were a lot of options you could change, I also remember things would get harder ala borderlands when more people joined.

Co-op in serious 2 was just great, more of the same for number 3:)

Croteam do a great job with their engines, the first was very underated in what it could do from a technical pov, the 2nd was solid as a rock... those screens suggest more good to come.
