Hello. I'm looking for some advice on a config for running Fedora 13+ with a bunch of Virtual Box VM's. I need an abundance of cpu and memory and was thinking of :

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T
6GB/8GB DDR3
1TB SATA drive

Anyone know of a good proven, overclocked system, that would fit the above. I am trying to have as fflexible a system, via power, as possible without entering server m/b and chip territory.
I was also planning on storing and executing VM's from a gigabit connected NAS device such as HP MediaSmart Server EX490.

Any comments / advice welcome.

ocuk do overclocked bundles- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-038-OB&groupid=43&catid=339&subcat=1802 with a 8gb upgrade is £482.22, but has a M-ATX motherboard if you need more pci slots.

for a complete system theres the Prism - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-021-OP&groupid=43&catid=1444&subcat= if you want more memory, just phone them up and ask for some changes.

or the Primo - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-022-OP&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat= again, they will happily make changes to suit.

I'm not certain, but I suspect that putting the virtual machines on a NAS is a bad move. It's introducing a considerable bottleneck where there doesn't need to be one. Can you have a couple of hard drives in the "server" box instead?

AMD's 6 core vs Intel's X58 chips is a difficult choice. I wouldn't like to guess which would perform better, though the latter lends itself to using more ram.

Neither overclocking nor fedora have a great rep as far as stability goes, but hopefully you're aware of that.

Thanks to both for advice. Would a different Linux Distro make any difference regarding Phenom II X6 and performance issues? Would Ubuntu be a better choice than Fedora? Or should I go for a Quad Intel - I just prefer price / performance of a 6 core to 4.

Just read on the official fedoraproject.org website that you should never overclock a linux distro - is this right - or is it ok to do with adequate cooling? (sorry - newbie question)
