So i find the perfect car. Dealer says £7500. I say I am happy to put deposit(£200) to move car to view to his dealership as he is getting it from a different one. He then tells me that he made a mistake and its £8500.

What do i do? My budget is £7000 but the car is perfect!

If your budget is rock solid at £7k then you walk away (assuming he won't come down). If it's flexible then work out whether the car is worth what he is asking and then make a decision?

Easy? :D

Dealers are absolutely unscrupulous these days. Went to see that Scirocco R the other day, dealer agrees tentatively a deal. Phones back that he's decided to offer less for my car, decided the APR is going to increase and decided that they won't chuck in a few freebies - instead they are going to charge for them.

My advice is much like I did... walk away and let them squirm. You may potentially lose out on that one vehicle, but don't be taken for a shmuck.

There are plenty of cars out there. But in current times there are not many serious buyers with money. Tell them the deal was agreed and ask them why they are trying to break that agreement. If they won't commit to the original price then walk away. A better car will be around the corner.

So look on pistonheads and find a much better car for less money and buy it this weekend?

EDIT: Or look on the manufacturers website, find the car, phone the dealership that exact car right now, and haggle with them directly. Cut out the dealer that's messing you around. You have the money so you are in control.

Oh, and let Fox know what car it is and he'll give an honest opinion of whether it's a good deal in the first place. While people tend to criticise him, from my experience he knows exactly what he's talking about.

Tell him to correct his mistake otherwise you're going elsewhere.

Don't allow some grinning, dishonest Sales Person to treat you in such a unsatisfactory manner.

You put a deposit down on a car for sale to the tune of £7500, not £8500.

He has mis-sold you the vehicle, has locked you in, and now knows you will likely buckle and pay an "extra" £800 overall against losing your deposit.

Ideally you want to tell him to stick it, get your £200 also and walk.
