Server 08 Printer Issue

Am having a rather brain melting issue with a printer and a server atm.

On the server I have the printer installed and showing and can browse to it's web interface via IE, so know that it is showing on the network, yet when I start a program that is needed to access the printer, it is saying that there are no printers present.

The application is being started in the same login profile, which is admin for the system.

Is there something very obvious that I am missing here?
 
Yes, printer was set as default and also shared.

Not using Office with this, but is a specialist program that has been developed for our business use....... ;) When you open it up, you should be able to see what printers are available on the network and assign one as necessary, but none are showing up. Works fine on other builds we have using Server 2000 and the program in question, just not when we try it on 08.....
 
I hope your 'Specialist Program' isn't a 'Written by someone who left 6 years ago with no documentation' program. :)

It sounds like the software is looking in the Server 2000 location for printers, which is probably handled differently in Server 2008. Do you have access to the source code for the software / any access to support or newer versions?

Edit: In the meantime, compare the registry branches in the 2000 and 2008 servers at this location:

Edit 2: Why is there a gap between the o and l in control? Is that just my Firefox being odd?

Haha...no software fully supported and written by outside company, we are the developers of the hardware platform that it is installed and run on.

Alas, will not have any access to the source code for the program too, but will have a look at the reg key area and see what they say on both servers.

Our resident geek on all things network and server side was also thinking that it is something to do with the way the different versions ahndle the print environment too.....will be a relief to him that others think the same..he was going rather bonkers about the whole thing...
 
It's difficult to guess how their software is fetching printer information for the client. You have a working environment to compare against which is a bonus.

I would kick this back to the developers personally, or at least ask for guidance from them.
 
Has been kicked back with a very large boot...but they are progressing slightly slower than a glacier on getting back to us.

From the working one, it appears the program looks for a printer in SERVER NAME/PRINTER NAME format.

Will keep plugging away at it this afternoon, am sure we can crack it.....or kill it with fire / nuke from orbit / set killer queen wasp on / strike boxing stance / put fist under chin ...... alas there is no letter box to pooh through and don't want to pooh through my own letter box.... :eek::eek:
 
Could it be using WINS / NetBIOS?... Either way this is something for the developers to fix. Nothing supported should be using WINS / NetBIOS intentionally in this day and age.
