server 2003 & 2008 Terminal server & Exchange clarification help

Surely SBS 2008 Prem. would be enough for what the OP wants (AD, Exchange, TS). SBS 2008 Prem allows you to install Window 2008 Server on another box, this could then be configured for TS or WebTS.

How many users will the OP need?

Possibly but he'd still need the cals and the extra server hardware and by the sound of it they don't want to spend much!

There are more options around virtulisation etc but probably just adds to the cost.

yea im reluctant to send them the vpn route as they are quite far from the exchange and with a max of 0.8mb upstream transfering files could get painful...

Think they ought to have a think about what they want and how much they want to spend as there isnt much that comes for free....

VMware ESX is a marvellous product and makes my life a hell of a lot easier day to day and it is certainly cheaper now than it was when we got it a couple of years back. We run almost 90 servers on our cluster over 40 of them live production servers plus dev/test/release enviroments.

The only option is to spend the money. If they're a charity the licenses wont cost much, if they're a commercial organisation there's no excuse for cutting costs.

Total software cost circa £3,300 retail + VAT

If they dont want to spend money, they cant complain about stuff not working the way they want!

yea the only way i can see that they might save a little, is by getting sbs 2k5 and having 5 or so xp pro boxes acting as terminals for remote connection. this would cost less than the 3k option but not the most elegant solution.

hmm how would the seperate xp instances handle network connections? assuming there was 1 network card and 5 instances wouldnt this be bad? or would it require and aditional 4 network cards?

Not fake, virtual.

Without meaning to cause any offence, are you sure you know what you're doing with Exchange and Terminal services? You dont seem to be as technically minded as I might expect for someone offering these kinds of services...

As I said, no offence, but Exchange particularly needs specialist knowledge to implement properly and securely and if you're selling your services to a company you may end up in trouble....

yea i have sufficient knowledge of exchange and ts, just usualy roll out sbs so quite rusty on the licensing and hardware requirements. Also i havent really bothered with virtual machines, hence the questions about the "virtual" ip / mac addresses. i only have the single client running standard server 2k3 who do have 2 servers 1 for dc and the other as exchange but they was deployed 2 years ago and i havent had to do one since. just need a good jog on the old memory.
