Ok, basically I'm trying to set up my second system (a little P4 box) as my torrent box. I have MSDNAA so have full access to all of MS's operating systems.
I tried using Linux, but it's a fair bit of hassel to set up just file sharing, so remote access was a bit much for me.
Now I'm trying to get it to work with Windows Server 2003. I can set up multiple accounts assign them to all different tasks etc. but I cannot get another PC to log onto the system.

I'm probably doing things the wrong way, but basically I want to have my housemates each have a login (can use one for everyone, but multiple sessions would upset it I'd have thought), but so they can access the same torrent client and add torrents to the list, and copy finished ones onto their PCs.

So yeah. how do I go about this in S2k3?

Make sure Remote Desktop is enabled, it's off by default.
Make sure all users are either Admins (Administrator is enabled as default), or better still, added to the Remote Users group.
Make sure any/all firewalls allow port 3389.

From each PC, use the 'mstsc /console' command to use the same session.

Most torrent clients can be configured to monitor a folder for new torrent files then download the torrents to another specified folder. Simply share these folders and assign permissions and no one needs to loginto your server and break it.

Ok, so I know where I went wrong...I fell slightly short of all the required entering of things.

Cool, I shall try these. I was trying to use the RDC in Win XP Pro, but it would always come back as not being able to access it, even though I had accounts and had RD enabled...but that wouldn't help with sessions/multiaccess of one area inc. programs mind.

I'm sure I'll be back in a sec with more questions/errors :D.

Hmmm, never thought of that...as far as I know uTorrent doesn't do folder monitoring though...it's my prefered client, as it allows allsorts of shecdule (sp?) and limits etc.

It does. ;) I use it and that particular feature.

Utorrent>Prefs>Other>Automatically Load .Torrents in Directory

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !

Sorry.

I use port 3390 BUT the DEFAULT port is 3389.

Sorry again.

Hehe, no worries, I'm actually just finishing updating the server box on WinUpdates, so it'll be a bit before I can play with RC etc.

You could, use the monitor for .torrent files, then download those into a folder which ISN'T shared. Then once thay are completed they get moved into another folder which is shared and your users can get access to the finished items, Save them trying to open unfinshed items because they can't actually see the Utorrent client to monitor the download progress.

Yeah, I have it running on my main system with it putting inprogress ones in one folder, and finished in another one...very handy that. :)

Well I got remote access to work, what I'm wondering is, can the RC or Win similar (sp?) program allow me to copy data from my main PC onto the server one?

Obviously this isn't a great worry as I have filesharing etc. enabled, just wondering for ease really. :)

Urmmm with that line, where would I use the command?

Start>Run

Yes it can. In the advanced options on the client, before you connect, you can choose which drives to use.

Options>Local Resources>More>click your choices.

Start>Run

Yeah, I was being slow. :p

Ah, cool, now I've got that working...and managed to get my file sharing to not work. :D

Always asks me for a logon for file sharing, but I can't see any way of stopping it from asking for one, as I can only allow share privelages to 'Yoshi users' (Server is called Yoshi)...I'm probably missing something incredibly simple for privelages...but it is late/early!

I've also now lost where it was that I could set up time limits on RCs...it must be time for bed methinks.

Thanks for the help so far ns400r. :) All help/info is greatly received.

When connecting to the share on the server, make sure you have a user/password that is the same as the logged on user from the client PC.
i.e. You logon to the client with Fred/password. Make sure there is a user on the server called Fred/password with the needed share rights.

For the time thing, from Start>Run>TSCC.msc

Look at the properties for the RDP-TCP under connections. Then look in the Sessions tab.

Right, I has my torrent box all working well...only problem I just realised is that using RDC in the standard way (I'm guessing I left it as standard...didn't fiddle with much) means that I run two different sessions, and I actually need it to take control of the server's logged on desktop.

Ah hah, I just used the command that you use from 'Run', and it takes over control of the server's logged on user. That's cool, looks like it's mostly sorted. :)

I was using the RDC shortcut thing supplied in my XP menus...which explains why it wasn't working.

Hmmm, well I broke it. I'm not too sure as to what I've done. As far as I know I haven't changed a thing, but my RDC is now not working.
Filesharing works fine, so I can still run the box for torrents, which is ok I guess.

Proof I broke it...

Also what I was wondering, is it possible to set up an 'Auto delete when a file is x days old'?

I want to set up basically a nearly fully automated system for getting files, aswell as removing.

Try connecting via the server IP address. Then if that fails , check the event logs.

Auto delete which file?
