Has anyone managed to get this working properly? I've had no end of bother with it and I'm thoroughly annoyed now, even taken out a support ticket with Symantec who have just turned around and said its a microsoft problem.

Thing is, everyone says installed the MAPI CDO thing, I've done this like 3 times but it still fails, MFCMapi fails with "MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED" which everyone replies with "just install the CDO" but I have, the appropriate reg keys are there as well!

What the hell is going on?

I have had the same issue - you also have to change the Order on the backup.. Backup the Exchange Stores firsts, then the Physcial Drives then anything else.... That will sort the issue out.

I wish it was that easy, I've gone through all the sum kb's to no avail, it is definitley a Mapi problem but I just don't know what.

Does it matter that it's x64 sbs?

Yes it has a mailbox, it's not hidden from the GAL, it's a delegated exchange admin and has full access to all mailboxes (tested using outlook).

I'm tearing my bloomin hair out, and you know the worst thing? It works if you use backup-to-disk, but apparently this is because b2d doesn't use MAPI.

Just tried MFCMapi 32bit and it appears to login now, but selecting the mapi profile, it looks like a really old version, like office 2000 and then it says some of the DLL's are missing, which is a bti strange because I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest CDO/MAPI stuff from m$ about 3 times now!

Euhm, yes you can do GRT to a tape.

There's plenty of threads on Symantec's site where it works on b2d but not to tape, and Symantec techs are stating it should work.

I have attempted to do GRT directly to tape and just cant see the granular breakdown in restore. Tbh I didnt spend more than 10 minutes trying to fix it as I did not need it.

It should work, we have it working at other client sites but I dont even get granular options when i go in to the selections.

Symantec have just fobbed me off to microsoft now because its a MAPI issue but my boss isn't accepting that and wants it escalated so I will have to see what they say.

I'm getting a new mapi error in mfcmapi now after installing outlook 2007 whereas it wouldn't connect at all previously as it looked like it had office 2000 mapi stuff based on the "profiles" window that came up. MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND is the new one but there is very ltitle information regarding this error and backup exec :(

Yes, it's a 2008 SBS server, the only other server onsite is a 2003 TS which I really don't want to have to use.

I have an customer with SBS 2008 and Backup Exec 12.5 backing up to an LTO2 Drive with no problem, so it the Exchange GRT does work when backing up to tape....

OP - it might be worth fully removing Backup Exec and try and clean reinstall, then install the MAPI component as per the Symantec KB (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/294622.htm)
then Make sure the Exchange Stores are at the top of the order in the backup job

Perhaps its a problem with installing MAPI on top of an an Exchange server.

Much like you cant put BES on a system with Outlook or install Outlook on a server running Exchange.

Might be worth a try running it from another server? (If you even have that option)

This used to be the case. Microsoft wouldn't support it although you could get it to work/do stuff in certain circumstances
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/266418

This changed with Exchange 2007 though. Exchange server no longer comes with the client side binaries. If you need to do stuff that requires mapi then you have to use another machine or put a mapi client on the server. I think this is why exmerge doesn't work on 2007 any more.

to the OP

The mapi dialogues change when you put outlook 2007 on as the standalone is based on an earlier version AFAIK

So the MAPI version is correct then? It's 6.5, it does appear to be broken because when i try and create a new profile I get these:

This one's greyed out, is this normal?

Can't see which DLL this error is relating to, nothing in the event viewer :(

When I tried it with outlook 2007 on the sbs server it all went through fine, but then I was getting the MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND.

CDO 1.2.1 = MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED
Outlook 2007 = MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND or 0X8004010F (after logging in to mailbox).

This works fine we have in a virtual environment

Server 2008 Enterprise MSCS +
Exchange 2007 +
Backup Exec 12.5 GRT

Windows 2008 64Bit OS .

Our backupexec is on its own box off site and not clustered. We keep backupexec seperate fomr exchange but the annoything thing is the backupexec backup account for exchange needs to be domain admin and admin on the exchange store.

This wouldn't happen to be on an HP server would it?

I have had endless trouble getting Backup Exec 12.5 running (both with and without GRT enabled).

I eventually tracked the problem down to the HP Insight Storage Agents service; disabled it and backups are running like a charm!
