Hi all,

Just got myself the HP ProLiant MicroServer deal.

Currently I have an internal 2tb and 2x2tb external drives.

As two of the drives are getting full it's hard to back them up.

So I'm planning to crack open the two external drives and place them in the server along with the internal.

My next step is to join two of the drives together to form one 4TB drive and then somehow backup that 4TB to the spare 2TB on a nightly basis (using some epic compression I'd imagine).

I've never done this sort of thing before and tbh getting the server is taking the plunge a bit! So I'd appreciate any advice (on a pretty much noob level) as to what OS I need to be installing and how to configure the drives (links would also be greatly appreciated).

Ta,

Tom

You need to consider what sort of files are going to be on the MicroServer.

Some files are more compressible than others.

4TB into 2TB may or may not go.

Also if you're compressing files as you back up I imagine it's going to take a lot longer to do it.

It's mainly going to be video and music. So lots of 700mb files, thousands of 5-10mb and a few 10gb+ MKVs.

I know it will take a lot longer but I plan to do it overnight when I wont be needing it.

Cheers
