Server build: 430 or E1200?

For a cheapish file server + proxy for my network, I'm wondering which processor to get. Every penny counts, and I'm wondering if there would be a significant advantage in having 2 cores instead of 1, for this purpose(ie worth £10...). The machine will be on 24/7, and never used for anything else:)
430
E1200
Please advise

Thanks,
Darkstroke

well acording to the intel website the e1200 does speedstep whereas the 430 doesnt (this is at 1st glance, dont take it as gospel), so I would asume that it would clock down & use less power than the 430.

The 430 has C1E but not EIST. I think the theory is that the 430 uses so little power that speedstep is not needed.

Thanks, 430 it is then!
Having checked, I know someone who runs a server with similar uses, with a 200mhz processor so the dual core really isn't necessary :)

I run mine on a P-III 1.4Ghz with 768MB RAM. The processor uses about 30W and the motherboard about the same (it's a low power VIA chipset). TBH, this is all you need. You can probably build one for £50 if you scout around for the right parts and it is so much better than a NAS box due to the functionality it has. Mine is a fileserver, WINS server and caching DNS server run on Ubuntu. Only difficulty sometimes is dealing with linux =/

Still, I could always pop Windows on there if I wanted to...

Of the two you suggested, the celeron 430 has a TDP of 60W whilst the E1200 has a TDP of 65W. There won't be too much in the power draws of each.

If you want really low energy, Gigabyte GA-GC230D i945GC Socket 479 (built in Atom 230 1.6GHz) hmm, a cute little ITX board.

Or get dual core Atom - Intel BOXD945GCLF2. This is a dual core Atom which uses only about 3-4W more than a single core and will help a bit in certain scenarios. The cost difference in negligible.

I would personally buy this instead of either processor you have suggested...

Now that's excellent, pure server material! And a good price too

Cheers,

However darkstroke, don't forget to consider the Intel board I listed above. It costs about the same but the second core does help a fair bit. 3-4W difference under load is also negligible.... It is also an ITX form factor.

Depends on the prices when I'm ready to buy, I wouldn't turn down a 2nd core for the same price, but paying anything more than £10 extra for it is impossible on my budget
Thanks for the advice all :)
