Hi, just looking around on the flea market, i might have around £90 to spend on a server to have a play with, just wondering if this would be any good for file hosting, game server hosting for 8 people etc

Just a few points. Rackmount server hardware is LOUD. It is also power hungry.

You'd be better off with a normal "gaming" PC spec as opposed to enterprise grade rackmount kit if you intend to use it day to day at home.

so as a comparison, what am i looking for in a desktop machine, bearing in mind the desktop system in thinking of is lowest of the low, the price is almost double already...

Am3 Barebone system £60
Sempron £24
4gb DDR3 £24

£126

i know noise and power consumption is loud and big on the rackmount stuff, but is the sacrifice worth it for the loss of a dual cpu set up, with raid drives etc? for something so basic.

The Server you are looking at will be a DL380 G4, right? The processor architecture in that is 90 nm! Prescott P4 based! Possibly even without Hyper-Threading (depending on SL number). They run stupidly hot, stupidly loud, and aren't even that fast, regardless of how many you shove in the box!

Even if you did end up going the rackmount route, what you are looking at is incredibly old, inefficient, and will cost a fortune to run. Even a 2nd hand Core 2 Duo based machine will be better equipped to cope, and nothing stops you running RAID on a desktop machine, so that's all moot anyway.

Stay away from those Xeon's! loud, slow, hot and 32bit.
There cheap for a reason ;)
Just for comparison i just sold a dl360g3 with 2*3ghzXeons, 8gb Ram and 2*72gb hard drives for £40. I'd consider that a good price for a server of that spec/age.
If you do want a server go for the Dell1850/2850 as they had 64bit support at least. :)

The DL380 3.6GHz has a 64-bit compatible processor. Doesn't make them any quicker, quieter or cooler though.
