Hi,

Just wondering what server monitoring software you guys use?

Reqs:

Monitor Windows 2003 Server Standard / Enterprise and x64 variants
Monitor Exchange 2007
Monitor SQL
E-Mail Problems

I was contemplating using MOM 2005 - but I would ideally like something that sat on the same server rather than having to buy hardware.

No cost limitations either at the moment.

One I am looking at is GFI Network Server Monitor - but I'm sure there are better out there.

Well you have a number of choices.

SNMP on its own (in a a Windows world anyway) doesn't yield that much info. However couple it with WMI and it becomes a very powerful tool.

We run a mixture of Nagios, Cacti and Spotlight inhouse covering about 3000 servers (70% W2k3 virtual). Nagios is very good at giving service status and is very flexible in customisation. Cacti is an excellent reporting tool and monitors literally everything from a small Cisco router to our large NetApp SAN. We use Spotlight on Exchange to monitor our Exchange 2007 clusters, very pricey but definitely worth it.

Thanks for the inormation.

I remember Spotlight - they do a few other products as well iirc - Spotlight on AD, etc. I'd forgotten all about them.

I'll have a look now!
