Server Monitoring Software

We use a combination of IPMonitor, Solarwinds Orion and HP Openview.

My role in comms focuses mainly on Orion with our helpdesk using IPMonitor and the specialist server teams using Openview and IPMonitor.

I like Orion, has it's flaws sure but it IS good

We use Orion for reporting but ver 10 is a pain in the ass, however we did look at moving to another but management were not so keen as in the ICT office we have two screens that show a map of our sites and colour coded depending on if up etc.

That is the function we would need, not as a tab in a web management console, but on its own

If any of the above fit that bill please let me know

I'm also in need of something like this.

I don't care if it's a hosted solution, but it needs to be really cheap/free and have agents to report as most stuff isn't public facing. Although I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to VPN in, as I'd quite like to monitor switches etc. too.

It shouldn't be too heavy though - my intention is to run it on a VPS, however Zenos for example seems to have quite excessive requirements.

This can easily be done in anything nagios based as they support the nagios status map which can be used to create a nice pretty overview with coloured blocks/icons etc... As I already mentioned nagios with check_mk is one of the best solutions as it has automated inventory process and really nice config creation process.

Zenoss integrates with google maps using a free API key to display a map of locations (Devices assigned to locations) and does colour coding of locations based on status.

We are still in the process of moving an 8 node WAN into a centralised Zenoss setup. Once complete should provide overview of our entire infrastructure estate.

using Zenoss in the office. Opensource with no ads running on an ubuntu server box. Not bad to set up and seems to work well.

didn't have budget for Solarwinds or would have gone for that after running trial.

Where are you getting the free Zenoss from as i cant find it?

& the same goes for 'IPMonitor'.

Thanks.

Im a big beliver in all of these open source programs but the real difference I have found is the preset monitors for different applications and services. I belive this is really makes the difference between corporate and open source and would love to see open source win this one for me!

Where do people go for the information on what to monitor and when its good/bad??

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I thought I'd update you guys on what we ended up using. :)

In the end I tried PRTG, Zenoss, and Nagios, and got on far better with PRTG than the others. Super simple installation and setup, and the UI is really intuitive. Does everything we need (And a stupid amount more!).

The only downside I saw is that it only runs on Windows based machines, but as we had a few spare licenses lying around, it wasn't a problem. PRTG itself wasn't expensive either considering we need less than 100 sensors at the moment.
