Most people have a server at home for centralised storage - store all your photos, music, movies, documents etc in one place that is available to any machine on your network.

Your system would be fine as a server, but many look to run as low power as they can get away with as the server is usually on 24/7, and a Q6600 at 3.4Ghz will be munching power needlessly unless you are doing transcoding or something else with it - someone else might want to comment there.

My storage server is an i3 2100T with 4GB RAM as it was one of the lowest power CPU's I could get my hand on in a board format I needed and it's still way over the top spec-wise.

okay thanks! is a NAS a server? I know that I could benefit from that me because I love streaming content from my laptop.

Yes, a NAS is a server but usually a NAS is more of a "device" in that the operating system is hidden away and you get some kind of GUI to play with - think of a NAS being a particular type of server.

HP Microserver is a good platform for a NAS.
