Hey everybody

I'm looking to set up a server from my old desktop which I no longer use. Basically Should I go with windows home server or is there a better solution out there? I want the server to act as main storage for all PC's and be accessable from outside my network (likely a separate issue). I would also like to have a central email and calender rather than rely on google and hotmails offerings. I will be adding extra storage but for now I have a 350GB and 1TB HDD so pooled disk storage would be good but not essential. I won't be using raid.

Can anyone recommend me an OS or is windows home server the best for my needs?

WHS or WinServer2k8 if you want Windows. Otherwise Ubuntu server or other various Linux distro's if you you're happy using Linux. It's a bit more lightweight than windows so depends on your specs.

cheers for the reply

specs are:
CPU: Athlon 6000 x2
Memory: 4GB ram
case: CM690
mobo: Asus M3A78 pro

Which would be easiest to set up and run? I've limited experience with linux. What are the benifits going one way or the other?

Stick xp or w7 on the machine.

Use google for email and calendar, google apps free if you have your own domain.

For outside access look at teamviewer or a free dynamic domain hosting service and open the ports you want

Mail hosted in your house will be a major fail...

Probably want to look at undercooking / under volting the CPU

I was just about to post this.

Don't host your own mail exchange unless you know exactly what you're doing. You might be able to get it up, but it will all come crashing down sooner or later.
