OK, so was halfway through collecting some items in my basket to build a dedicated server, when I remembered off another certain site, they had something called Server memory, it was like fully buffered or something. Just wondering if a server for running games etc. requires this sort of memory, or if standard DDR2 and DDR3 is OK, many thanks, hope this post doesn't break rules about posting competitors etc. Thanks in advance for help.

Depends on the motherboard.

If it's just a standard DDR2 board then standard DDR2 will be needed. If it's a server board then you may want to look at EEC memory. Some desktop can take EEC memory too.

The fully buffered memory is probably FB-DIMM, and that shouldn't be necessary unless the board demands it.

ok cool, but is there a performance difference? say i want to host several Gameservers on one box, should i be using conventional hardware? or buffered ram?

I wouldn't be looking at FB-Dimms unless you're prepared to go down the Socket 771 Xeon route. And that's quite expensive.

Just buy a desktop set-up with a quad and 4gb-8gb of DDR2 memory.
