Hello.

I've never really been into server hardware etc but a client has asked me to spec a server for his company.
Downtime of the server will be a major issue as it will be running call centre software so redundancy is a key factor.
Ideally we will need Dual CPU, Dual PSU (hot swappable, if possible) and RAID 1 with hot swappable drives.
The software isn't too intensive so the server doesnt need to be a monster.
Any brands or particular models i should research? IBM? Dell? HP?
Form factor doesnt matter to much either.

Any input will be appriciated.

Bobster.

A basic server can be cheap. However you said downtime will be a major issue so this is where it starts to become expensive. It really depends on what level would they consider is an acceptable amount of downtime.

Vendor is really down to what you prefer. Personally I like HP equipment, I am sure there's others that hate HP and love Dell etc.

Don't forget basic but essential areas like UPS and Backup.

I think the General opinion including yours and mine is that HP is the best quality and support but comes with expense, however there are good independant distributors out there that can get some really good pricing on HP options.

Thanks for your input guys

Looking into things a little i've narrowed it down to the following two.
One is an HP, HP ProLiant ML350p Gen8.
The other is a Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX100 S7p.

Anyone had a dealings with Fujitsu?

Not really seen one for about 8 years. Only reason I saw one then was because the company I worked for wanted the cheapest things possible. Seemed fine at the time though. Did it's job.

If I had the choice though it would be HP.

If downtime is a major issue, have you looked at virtualization across multiple VM hosts?

There's very little to choose between the major server vendors these days. HP are good, but we've got plenty of Dell kit too.
