Hey guys wonder if you can help me,

im looking for a few programs to run on my server....

firstly i want a program to run on the server periodically backing up workstations, only wanting to backup personal files, email and address book etc from the workstations, but ideally want it to run on the server side.

secondly i want a similar antivirus program that runs on the server yet checks workstations periodically.

do these exist?

Are you looking for cheap/free stuff or do you have budget to spend?

If you have budget then something like symantec backup exec with remote agent licenses will allow you to install backupexec on the server and remote agent on the clients and backup any files on the clients with ease.
For antivirus i'd recommend installing it locally as it's easier to monitor running processes and to do so from the server introduces a big overhead. Most AV like McAfee enterprise runs locally but updates are all centrally managed from the server and I believe, though I don't actually do this due to sheer number of clients, you can set them up to dump logs to a directory on the server to easily monitor what's been detected where.

File backup - you could get the clients to use roaming profiles and then make sure that the users keep their stuff in the profile and that way you only need to backup the profile directories on the server.

A/V - We have used Trend Worry Free and also the SME versions of the same products and they have done the job for us.

How's the Spit coming along BTW ?

Sitting on axle stands again, decided to make a few improvements over the winter, might actually drive the thing next year! lol.

I cant use roaming profiles as some of our workstations are laptops which need to be able to work stand alone.

thanks for the ideas guys.
