Hi Guys,

I wonder if you can help me? I'm looking to spec up 2 pc's to be used as server boxes.

I'd do it myself but its been a few years and a little behind on the latest hardware.

My Budgets around £600, so £300 for each. I could possibly spend a little more if needed.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

One will be used for managing the network including several PC's, around 12 Pc's the other for data management.

Yeah I saw those, you cant argue with the price. Do you think they will have enough punch?

Depends on what you mean by punch.

You have not really said what they will be used for.

You have said this "One will be used for managing the network including several PC's, around 12 Pc's the other for data management."

So by data management do you mean fileserver? backup server?

What are you going to use to manage your network? Do you mean active directory?

Without knowing what you want to do its hard to answer your question

I don't think he knows himself.

you hit the nail on the head with that one.

I'll have to ask. My understanding is that one will be for files and backing up (NAS) whilst the other managing the traffic of the network using Windows Server 2003.

I can find out something more specific if this isn't enough information.

I feel I should mention is that we remote in quite a bit when out of the office etc.

We also have a communication system, a hosted PBX solution. Since its hosted externally not sure if its an issue but thought I best mention it as a assume it routes through our network.

One other question, we were thinking about having a SSD just a small one (30GB?) on the two machine perhaps just to install the OS on and anything else of importance. Would this be of benefit or overkill? How do SSD hold up being on 24/7?

Thanks for the help.

I'm thinking now just to build one. From reading around these forums I figure low power consumption and lots of ram are the key points. CPU usage is low for a fileserver/nas?

Pro tip: For servers in a business environment (as in not home servers) dont build your own. Just get a couple of cheapish Dell or HP towers and enjoy the peace of mind and warranty
