Server Spec

Agree that going virtual would make more sense, but lets be honest, if the OP starts a thread about building a file server from scratch using consumer grade hardware, no redundant PSUs etc, etc - do you honestly think that this sounds like an organisation that is pushing virtualisation or cloud computing.

I'd say no

Wow... wasn't expecting to get so much flak after already agreeing that building from scratch was a bad idea!

Suffice to say I'm getting more quotes in for a properly managed system. Could a mod close this one down please? :)

I think it's just a lot of people trying to dissuade you, on a subject many feel strongly about :). No flak intended, certainly not from me anyway.

Agreed - it's not flak IMHO, more gentle persuasion :D I, and I suspect others, have had to resurrect "servers" built from OEM components.

Agreed with the above. I love building my own - but frontline server should be 100% single supplier with warranty etc.

I went into a company who had paid a large sum of money for a DPM server

Yep, it was a PC not a server lol Coolermaster case would you believe

£250,000 later they have a dual SAN commvault solution running from 2 HP servers

I would seriously consider doing away with your own server altogether and hosting it on something like Windows Azure/Amazon EC2 (AWS). Particularly if you're already considering moving emails to Office 365/Exchange Online.
