Server Suggestions for Small Business

That hasn't been discussed yet. They asked me 12 months ago and I set them up with Google Apps for Business and Sugarsync. They've just come back to me asking for my advice again and specifically asked about setting up a server - I gave them the option of Office 365 and a price for server/windows sbs2011

oh, have they come back with a decision yet. Yes people can advise but it's up to someone else what they would like to implement as long as they pay the right price for setups.

They point blank refused office365 due to costs and because a server running small business server 2011 would be cheaper than office365 over 2 years.

I think my best bet would be to setup a view vm's on my laptop so I could demonstrate the server option, then also trial office365 to see how they compare.

Is that apples against apples on cost? Whilst SBS is pretty reliable these days, have they costed in support (other than hardware) to cover sorting any problems that come-up?

A lot of people forget about this and it's extremely important businesses ensure there is money to have support.

It's all well going for an 'in-house' option but add support costs on top and it can add up to a lot of money. For 5 users it's not worth it.

^ As above somebody has to be paid to sort/patch etc this server, even if you are going to do it for bestest mates rates what happens if you drop off the face of the planet?

Also are you sure a server with SBS 2011 using redundant disks with a backup solution is cheaper than 2 years of Office 365?

Is your friend in university by any chance, several friends have approached me with the exact same question for their computer science coursework ;)

Office 365 will be better for the reasons other people have stated. If something goes wrong on a server you build, what will happen then?

It might be more expensive but it's a lot easier to use and setup and a lot more reliable.
