Services you tip?

Do you tip the postman and DHL guy too?

You can't reason with them, I'm not against them doing it, I just don't like it when they expect others to or see it as a norm. Because if you tip one person you might as well tip everyone, right? wrong, apparently.
They are just born into/taught that this is a normal thing and can't make an informed decision and seethat what they are doing is a bit weird. It's almost autonomous to some people.

There are literally hundreds of jobs I could list that are equally deserving of tips based on service provided and salary but, because it's not the social norm they don't.

It was horrible in Canada when the people I were with said you had to, regardless of service provided, it sounds very backwards to me, almost a play on weak minds, if it's not for gratuity what is it? Free money? Raise the prices of food if it's no longer considered a tip but "required". Same goes for people visiting here from North America.

But I'll say it again, I don't care if other people want to.

If theres a group of us eating at a resturant then we normally throw in a few quid tip, but apart from that not at all thats what minimum wage is for.

Cabbies and waitresses.

I don't tip food delivery, because if it is from somewhere like domino's you are already paying a premium for the convenience of having it delivered. Always pay with card in advance to avoid the embarrassment!

What embarrassment? I hate being made to feel bad for not leaving a tip for an average service that I've already paid for.

What I hate even more is when the waiter comes over to take your card payment and automatically adds on the optional service charge without even asking. He gets told where to shove it, but I bet a lot of people don't check the amount or don't realise it's optional.

Usually tip at restaurants but only if the service has been outstanding but i usually dont because most of the places i go to is inhabited by moody ****wits that look absolutely bored of their jobs....plus it would help if they could speak proper English as in a noisy place its quite hard to hear what the hell they are saying lol.

Cabs i usually dont tip unless its an odd price but usually my cab fares end up being pretty even plus i know my local cab office guy pretty well so i always get a nice discount from him whenever i use him.

I only tip people if they deserve it.

I know some people will probably say this is wrong but I'm generally against tipping for the sake of tipping, I know full well waiters etc make some of their wages from it but that's not my problem.

Just to clarify, by "deserve it" I mean treat my like a valued customer, an apology if food is a bit late, coming to the table to check if everything is fine/if we want more drinks etc, good service in general.

I also refuse to eat anywhere that has a compulsory service charge, if I don't have a choice, I won't leave an extra tip.

Surely good service in general is part of their basic job? The things you list aren't exactly beyond the call of duty.

I don't agree with tipping because it propagates an attitude that a) if you don't tip, you're either poor, stingy or a bad person and b) that you are entitled to receive only the poorest of service until you pay more than that is stated on your bill (which in some places is extortionate anyway!)

I don't tip generally unless the service that is provided is beyond what was paid for on the bill. I might give my local mechanic an extra tenner come MOT time if he took the wifes car round the block to get it through the previously failed emissions test or say a waitress is clearly working her ass off in an understaffed premises but still manages to provide you with a smile and prompt, courteous service.

Tipping for the sake of tipping is utter madness. Why would anyone pay extra for a service they are already paying for?

Only in restaurants and only when paying in cash.

We were at Hotel Du Vin I believe, they didn't have one of those options on the chip and pin machine to give a tip so I left it not having any change and not being particularly impressed with the food considering the prices.

Afterwards, my GF said she was so embarrassed because we didn't leave one. Just spent 100 odd quid on dinner and she's red faced about not leaving a tip, that's right, I carry a tenner for tipping purposes

I shouldn't be obliged to pay extra if I simply don't have change regardless of how up its own arse the restaurant is.

I tip when it is deserved, like if I actually get good service in a restaurant as opposed to the waiter forgetting to bring cutlery in what was supposed to be a decent place in London

Haircut is usually £8 and give a £10.
Deliveries I round up to the nearest pound or note.
Taxis are the same as deliveries.
Couple of quid at eating establishments usually.

I tip waiters/waitresses but only if I think they did a good job I dont tip on the quality of food as this is not their fault.

I know a few ppl that tip bin men which is beyond me why? I mean they are paid quite well for the job they do and the binmen I know work from 6am - 11/12 each day which is only 5-6hrs work why do they need a tip?

Sorry if there are any binmen in here that feel they deserve tips im just a bit confused as to why :)
