Run SETI on a GPU?
Run SETI on only one PC?

Apologies for there being no news post last week but I was on a canal boat with no hope at all of getting the news done. As always with cases like this, the news covers the past fortnight EXCEPT for the weekly dumpage and single league stats, which cover the past week only.

The news has been shifted again, this time from Fridays to Sundays. I've decided to do this in order to let the various stats sites catch up with Berkeley’s weekly three-day outage.

We keep going from strength to strength; our RAC has never been so high and we have five teams in our sights!

Welcome to the new members, and as always congrats to the tiffy winners! Don’t forget that you can get your tiffies from www.teamocuk.co.uk; simply click on your username, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the relevant urls to display them in all their Technicolor beauty on this forum! If you think you have been missed off the milestones list, please let me know and I’ll add you manually.

Sorry for yet more news failure yesterday. I'd just got back from a week away walking the Cumbria Way and was too shattered to cobble a news post together.

Hopefully normal service will resume as of next week as I'm pretty sure I've nowt else planned. As dictated by my wallet... :(

Some sort of database would be very handy as long as it was done well.

Using one WU as the benchmark would provide a direct comparison from one piece of hardware to another. However, the 'problem' with this is that only one angle range would be being benchmarked - there would be no data for extremes of angle range, and as we know lower angle ranges generally take longer to process (at least on GPUs) and so any figure obtained would be very limited.

The other method - taking averages of x number of WUs - also has issues, as WUs that ended early - due to noisy data contained in the WU or otherwise - would have to be extracted from the data and GPU and CPU tasks differentiated and separated. It would also mean users having to sift through their tasks to obtain the data, although importing completed valid tasks into, say, Excel and sorting it as required would avoid that problem.

EDIT: As a test I just imported 20 completed valid WUs into Excel and got an average time of 871 seconds for my GTS250, but the shortest time was 19.69 seconds (noisy WU) and the longest 1,272, so obtaining an average figure would have to be done carefully for it to have any meaning.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes :)

Tried to get up to Kendal for the day but couldn't thanks to the M6 being shut and the whole of Preston and the surrounding area subsequently being at a complete standstill... so ended up going the other way to Southport for a stroll along the sea front :D
