Run SETI on a GPU?
Run SETI on only one PC?

As always, congrats to the tiffy winners! Don't forget that you can get your tiffies from www.teamocuk.co.uk; simply click on your username, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the relevant urls to display them in all their Technicolor beauty on this forum! If you think you've been missed off the milestones list then please let me know so I can add you manually.

H'onwards and h'upwards!

Im going to amuse myself tonight by trying to get more than one einstein wu working on my gpu at a time - should be fun!
Seriously though - 6-9% gpu usage is such a waste

I've just finished trying that. Obviously wrote the app_info wrong and it's messed up the client_state file for einstein@home in that BOINC can't find any Einstein WUs or apps (even though they're all present because I backed up the einstein folder first). I don't know how to fix that, so it looks like I'll just have to delete everything associated with einstein - should've backed up the whole BOINC folder rather than just the einstein one :(

All my remaining SETI WUs have just been sent :D

Edge, I detached and reattached einstein and thankfully my lost WUs were resent, so no harm done. Might give it a miss for now trying to build an app_info to get more than one GPU WU running, though it'd still be interesting to see a) if it's possible and b) if there is anything to be gained.

Welcome to the team :D

No, it's normally quick 'n' easy to download tasks but they've had recent issues with the air conditioning so they had to shut down their systems whilst it was sorted. All this means that there's a backlog of results to upload and people in their droves wanting to download new tasks, which obviously leads to slow-downs.

Bear with it, you will get work :)

Halz - one of the members around here - sorted those sigs out for us but I've not seen him around for a little while. There is another site that I think Biffa hosts, but I can't remember what the URL is for that :(

I've temporarily stopped crunching SETI until the servers recover, so for the moment I've fired up the ol' Einstein and QMC jalopies.

After reading around on the Einstein boards, someone experimented with the <count> value in the Einstein@home section of the client_state.xml file, changing it from 1 (default) to 0.22 to get four WUs running simultaneously. It worked.

I tried this on my GTS250 but got something along the lines of an 'insufficient CUDA' error message. 0.33 didn't work either, but 0.5 did so I'm limited to two tasks running on my card. They run fine - no computation or validation errors - and get virtually twice the output as there's roughly only a four minute increase in the time taken to complete a task. The only possible downside is that there was mention of the <count> value being reset to 1 every time that rig communicated with Einstein's servers, but I've not found that to be the case.

Im sure I tried that, what gpu usage are you seeing when you do that?

Only ~45% at most. Try as I may I can't get a third einstein process to run on it, which I suppose could be a hardware limit with the card. That's a shame, as in theory I could easily run four processes on this card (and still have ~10% of the GPU not being used).

Okeedokee got my head around milkyway and einstein so before i go rattling off and fiddle with app_info yet again will someone tell me how i add both of those projects to my sig....much appreciated :)

Look at your sig code. Where you see 'SAH', add 'EAH' and 'MWAH' immediately after it, separared by ':' so that that whole section looks like 'j=SAH:EAH:MWAH&i='. Depending on what order you set those determines how they are ordered in your sig.

Unfortunately, it seems that whenever your rig contacts the einstein servers to get more work it resets the <count> value to 1, so at the moment the only way around it is to keep changing it manually. I suppose an app_info could be set up to enforce the <count> setting, but I haven't a clue how to go about doing that :(

The only other issue with E@H is the ridiculous amount of bandwidth required to download work. Each GPU pulsar task has four files of ~1MB each and the correlation tasks seem to be made up of 44 files, some of which are up to 4MB and many over 3MB . Put another way, I currently have well over 800 einstein transfers for less than 50 tasks...

Hehe :D

Unfortunately they're given names that hardly roll off the tongue: the pulsar that Einstein (more accurately, a couple of E@H users) found has been named PSR J2007+2722...

Yep, you just need to alter the y value. Y = 10 puts the Rank & Credit text right at the top, which leaves enough room at the bottom for a fourth project, although setting y to 13 aligns everything properly.

Toxic, don't forget that each GPU task for Einstein needs one CPU core as well... not sure if that makes it easier or harder for your decision making though :D

Speaking of Einstein, all downloads have finally finished and I am proud to report that a measly 94 WUs currently occupy ~3.7GB of disk space...

Am going to pursue the app_info thing on einstein see what trouble i can get into.

In that case I strongly recommend that you disable network activity and back the entire BOINC folder up before doing that - I tried writing an app_info for Einstein a few days ago and it borked my client_state.xml, which caused BOINC to lose track of all my Einstein WUs. Thankfully I got them back as resends after I'd detached and reattached, but you might not be so lucky... You'll need to include references to the GPU app and at least the Global Correlations S5 Search #1, if not all available CPU apps. Good luck though, and if you manage to get a working one then please spill the beans as I'd really, really want to use it :D

Ok so in my sig EAH = Einstein , SAH = Seti any idea what it is for collatz?

Not a great project but i use it as my Milkyway ATI backup and MW is down so much ive got quite a total going.

Unfortunately you won't be able to use Collatz in your sig as the stats that the sig uses are taken from Berserker's stats site (www.teamocuk.co.uk), which doesn't include Collatz.

Three Einstein WUs running simultaneously, nice! I can only get two to run on my GTS250 :(

Also, the Astropulse WUs you have are legendary :D. Must be something going on though, as every AP WU I've crunched is completed in less than 10 hours...
