SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 168 18th Febuary - 24th Febuary 2012

On the whole SETI is fine, but when it has problems they tend to last several days. Stick with it, all will be well soon.

There are no CPU units coming through at the moment other than Astropulse.

While SETI downloads I'm computing 2/3 Milkyway and 1/3 einstein. When they're all running it's 1/4 each to einstein and SETI, and half to Milkyway. I already have 300 cobbles clocked for Milkyway running for about 2 hours.

EDIT: Computed overnight, just checked. Not running GPU aided because I have an ATi.

EDIT2: Goddammit. AstroPulse carries on returning computation errors

It's been a hard slog this week but it paid off :D

well done derv :)
I don't seem to be getting my seti units validated at the moment and I cant check them as the systems down , not too sure what is going on with them. Its been running almost the same amount of time as Einstein and thats almost at 6k ( low I know, just started :L) but seti is not even at 500. Is this right ?

Similar problem to RiseAgainst. Seti hasn't got any credits for me yet I've completed about 3 WUs, I think their credit services are bugged or something. Either way, it's some problem with the credit service.

My main at the moment is Milkyway. Started at about 10PM on the 25th and I have 2440 cobbles clocked on that and 500 clocked on Einstein, soon to be 1k (Only signed up to that yesterday). SETI is at an amazing 0 cobbles.

are you guys usuing the new boinc client or the old one? i had trouble getting wu's with the new one, so went back to old and no probs at all getting them.

By units I was just using the term that riseagainst was using - I think he was referring to credit/cobbles. I have done another few WUs, all got to the "ready to report" stage and when I turned them in... no credit.

The supply is no problem though. Got half a day stacked up in case of Internet outage, I don't use it excessively.

Nope - having same trouble - just can't get any work from Seti. Switched to Milkyway for a few days and Einstein but noticed the Einstein work gives you really low points.

I'm getting a steady supply of GPU units coming through now (about 400 of them sitting in my tasks list), but nothing whatsoever for CPU. Am using the latest client. Milkyway is getting my CPU love at the moment.

will1b: It can take a while for the credits to register - you will get them.

eggcup: Nice tiffy. I can see you quietly crunching away, got my eye on you :D

Don't worry. The way SETI works is that you need 2 or more people returning the same WU with the same result before any credit is granted. If the 'Tasks' section of 'Your account' page was working all the units you have processed would be listed there as awaiting validation. It may take some time as there is no way of knowing when the partners result will be reported but it will happen eventually ;)

Yeah getting work fine but no credits , Iam sure it will work out though :) as a total noob question what are vlars :L ?

With a simple google search, it returned on the SETI@Home site as being
"Very Low Angle Range". Just a kind of WU.

Oh, ok. Thanks. Time to wait for someone else to validate.

I have been reading about validation - the more you return with no errors the less validations are needed. So that's pretty cool, I'll be increasing credit speed the more I process

EDIT: lol. Just checked my BOINC client and 370 cobbles have gone through.

Ahh no problem , I have been looking at them all waiting for validation till the system went down. Yeah knew about the checking aspect just didn't realise that it took this long , just have to wait and see how many of those lovely credits I have :)

I've just removed Milkyway and SETI has magically started downloading CPU units.

Looks like we are back in the game. Let the crunching begin.

As will1b rightly said, VLAR stands for Very Low Angle Range.

VLAR tasks are limited to being run on CPUs, as they take aaaaages on GPUs due to the architecture difference between them and CPUs; GPUs just aren't efficient at all in processing VLAR tasks and thus the compute time ends up being ridiculously high.

To prevent this, Berkeley's servers look at every task and assign those with an angle range deemed to be very low as a VLAR task to make it unavailable to GPUs. Therefore, if there are only VLAR tasks available to be sent out you won't get any GPU work. (Such tasks can be easily identified by looking at the task name in BOINC manager, as they have _VLAR appended to the end.)

You'll also find that a lot of the task reporting on the S@H website has recently been disabled to help with bandwidth consumption. Just keep processing and the points will come...!
