Setting static IP

Easiest solution and the one I use (I have my home PCs always use the same IP as I control all the house PCs remotely if I need to) is to use DHCP reservation (or the equivalent name on your router) so that the router always gives each PC the same IP address.

This way you have a static IP without needing to worry if it will work at other locations.

The easiest way to do this is go into the local area connection properties and select IPV4

On the first tab select obtain an IP address automatically and then on the second tab 'alternate config' set up your user config ip details.

This works on all my machines and the laptops are used a 4/5 different locations

Yeah I managed to work out how to set the IP reservations last night so cheers for the assistance guys, no doubt I'll be updating this thread if/when it all goes knockers-up and no one can get on the internet!
