Hi,

I recently had a thread in GH regarding an upgrade I am doing in Feb.

Basically I had planned on going from a 8800GT to a 5770 but here's the bit I need some help with....


I have heard reports that the 5770 does not work with motherboards with version 1 PCI-E.

If this is the case then I'll need a new motherboard.

From what you have read is it a problem with the nforce chipset or something else?

I have sent a webnote and they said

The sapphire 5770 are backward compatilbe cards and weve have no feed back saying otherwise we have tested this ourselfs and works fine.

I have P35 board but it seems that P43 boards are all PCI-E 2
 
I've just upgraded to a 5770 the other day, and i'm using an Asrock Dual-VSTA motherboard.I think thats PCIE 1,running at x4, and the Radeon is working fine for me.

Yeah seen that but again it's nforce I'd like to rule out P35 chisets and whether or not you HAVE to have a PCI-E 2 motherboard. Like I said I'm planning on upgrading next month so I'd like to know in advance if I need a new motherboard.

If the Asrock Dual VSTA board runs it I can't see why mine wouldn't as the Asrock is only x4 I believe (AFAIK).

I haven't bought the card yet. Getting it next month I just don't want to get a new card and then find out it doesn't work and I have to then go out and get a new board I'm already having to replace my PSU at the same time as I'm using my backup one (425W) as my tagan died.

425 watt psu will be fine for a 5770
after days on forums the problems seemes to be located within the nforce chipsets
my cousin tested the card in his socket 775 rig and it worked fine which i believe had a pci-e 1.0
sometimes a bios update,moving ram slots,hot plugging monitor,chipset updates can all spark the 5770 into life if your not getting a post when installed

if you google 5770 NO POST

you will get a lot of info with different peoples problems and the hardware they were using and if they cured the problem or not.

I had two running in an Abit IP35-PRO. They were fine.

I now have them in an X38 chipset for no reason other than I got the board dirt cheap.
 
Sounds like it's a problem with your board/pc tbh. Or rather other peoples. Although if in doubt the only way to be sure is order one and find out.

It sounds like, at least to me, you've seen a couple horror stories on the iterwebz and started worrying. Before this thread I'd never heard of such a problem but even if there is you wont know until ones actually plugged in :(

It turns out that they have just recieved a message from ATI reguarding this issue. ATI have just admitted that the card will only run properly on motherboards with PCI-E 2. Older motherboards using PCI-E 1 will not work properly, despite the system requirements not stating this. ATI have effectively miss-sold this product to all producers of the HD5770. The engineer from OcUK stated that allthough a new batch will be brought out soon to resolve this issue, they will not RMA the card as they will test it on Mobo's using PCI-E 2 only.

Any attempts to get a refund from ATI will be passed on to the companys that produced the cards, leaving it to them to decide wether to refund their customers.

I'm appauled that this is acceptable practice for a reputable hardware producer.

Hmm. Not sure about a 425W PSU it has 34A across the 12V's and I did plan on getting new PSU any way.

I think I'll just go for it. Sadly like I said I can't order for 3 weeks.
