Setting up a COD4 server help

My mates and I enjoy playing against each other, but we want to have one of us host the server.

Can anyone link to a good very basic guide as to how to go about this? I appreciate we need to make a server config file but have no idea what to put in it. All we want to do is change the hardcore respawn time and the map rotation.

I have my config, its in the directory and my shortcut is set to point to it. Problem is that I cant connect to it nor can I see it in the game browser

If I dont use my config then I can see it fine. Is this likely to be a problem with the config?

All I can remember from when I used to do this is make sure the necessary port is forwarded (28960?)and disable your firewall at first to prevent it blocking it. I used the 'start dedicated server' through the COD4 menu.

to be honest your probably better off just renting one, you should be able to get one cheap if you shop around, certainly no more than £20 per month depending on the size, split that cost between you and its peanuts

Its for a LAN so going online isnt an option. I think I've got it sorted now, just need to customise it a bit more
